As far as monetization, you need to be the right site for the right niche, and you need to actively promote your site in a positive way (read: don't go out and spam it, promote it in a positive way that will draw people in so you can keep them with good content). I felt I was pimping myself, trying to negotiate & renegotiate a place to put those ads, relinquishing a certain amount of my control in regards to what ads would come up (irrelevant or otherwise). I like white space & I don't like putting crap in it. So I took it off. Until I can find something I believe in or that I like, my blog's staying beautifully ad-bare.
