Submitting to Search Engines

I asked bloggers if they knew if they had actually submitted their blogs to search engines. Most didn’t know or weren’t sure. These are the most rudimentary newbie blogging tips. Here are the main ones for you to take care of:

  1. Submit to Microsoft live search http://search.msn.com/docs/submit.aspx
  2. Submit to Google http://www.google.com/addurl/?continue=/addurl
  3. Submit to Yahoo http://submit.search.yahoo.com/
  4. Google Webmaster Tools https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/docs/en/about.html

Number 4 is Google Webmaster tools. You can read about it and at least to be familiar with available tools anyone can use.

Where did I get this information? I recommend going to this site and reading up a little. You might consider installing their tool bar and analyze your own site and other sites to start learning what SEO is and how it works.

There are other places to submit to and you can read more at the site listed above. So many people forget the most basic of things to do and this is a reminder to do it. Maybe your site is doing well and you’ve never done this; it may help boost you a little more if you make sure you are listed!

Menopauseprincess: I already know! How you may ask? By reading your mind!

  3. Janice on August 23rd, 2007 10:19 pm

Bobby, #1 & #2 are easy to register. #3 under the feed url I encounter some problem. They requested to insert this line of Meta tags to our homepage

I got an error with it. It goes :
“”Your template could not be parsed as it is not well-formed. Please make sure all XML elements are closed properly.
XML error message: The element type “META” must be terminated by the matching end-tag “”.

I cant understand what it is saying :(
The goggle one is also not so straight forward. I will read in details again when the boys are not around. They are messing around my notebook now.

Thanks for a good useful post again. :)

  4. Revellian on August 23rd, 2007 11:45 pm

Janice, The yahoo submission, if it asked you to insert metatags, you cannot if you are using the new blogger template (this is the one you use). There are ways to be able to have metatags on blogger, I will have a post on it soon. #4 is webmaster tools from Google and is here if you’re interested but isn’t a necessity. What is the feed url you used, feedburner or Atom (the default of blogger)?

  5. Janice on August 24th, 2007 5:56 am

Bobby, the feed url is http://feeds.feedburner.com/janiceng :)

  6. Revellian on August 24th, 2007 5:57 am

Janice: That’s the one I used on mine (from my feedburner account) and it worked. Perhaps Yahoo won’t allow you to submit to them unless you own your own Domain and host yourself. Yahoo, as far as search engines go is the #1 ranked search engine over Microsoft and Google. If I find out a way to get passed this issue I’ll let you know  You cannot add the metatag to blogger yet. I’m trying to find the safest, most effective way to do it. I’ve seen some people’s methods of using meta tags but I’m not sure how healthy or possible detrimental to your blog. Sorry for any confusion but right now, don’t worry because it’s no big deal

  7. Jean on August 24th, 2007 6:30 am

Bobby, thanks for providing the llinks. I’ve registered to all three engines. I did not encounter any problem like Jan said. All went well. Thanks, BIG GUY!
and #4, i had difficulties digesting. Mayb i should just wait for you to post about it. It’ll be easier reading frm you.

  8. Revellian on August 24th, 2007 6:32 am

Jean, don’t worry about #4. Just know that there are many things out there free to use that are really for people that own their own domains and host themselves. One day, you’ll probably decide to make that change out of necessity so you can control everything. It’ll happen, and you’ll know when you’re ready. It takes weeks some times for the listings to take effect. Do searches of your name and your site’s name in yahoo, MS, and google to see what comes up

    Hey Bobby,

I too encountered difficulties trying to submit to google with the meta tag thing. Too many moving parts for this beginning blogger. Any way to take it down to the level of “blackboard and hand puppets”?

  12. Revellian on August 24th, 2007 1:10 pm

Menopauseprincess: Don’t worry about that right now. I’ll explain coming up

  13. Barrett Laurie on August 24th, 2007 7:28 pm

Hey Bobby, what do you know about submitting to Ask.com! That is the only one I can’t figure out! Thanks for the great post! You have the best tips!

  14. Barrett Laurie on August 24th, 2007 7:29 pm

Oops that should have read ….What do you know about submitting to Ask.com?!

  15. Revellian on August 24th, 2007 7:29 pm

    Barrett: Go to http://submissions.ask.com/ping?sitemap=http%3A//www.yoursite.com/yourmap.xml

You’ll need your sitemap url to do it.

Hi Marzie, I’m not 100% sure of what you are saying. I have to add some sites for other people so I will make notes of exactly what I had to do. When I’m done I’ll have an answer for you

  18. sassy on August 25th, 2007 4:04 am

I think it’s a good thing I keep coming back here. It like, duh, reminds me to do the stuff I forgot to do when I get up the blog. This morning I was pleased as pie when finally able to google myself.
BTW Bobby, ‘and off the subject as usual) I noticed your a guitarist ! Is there a place where we can hear your stuff?

I’m a lousy guitarist, if you will. A lousy drummer/pianist/singer as well. My hubby’s a musician so I’m kinda used to jumping in and replacing whomever’s missing. (flaky musicians, don’t always show up!)

  19. Revellian on August 25th, 2007 4:05 am

Sassy: Sorry for the delay! I’m recording an album of instrumental guitar music and I’ll give one to you when I am finished

  22. Sharon on August 25th, 2007 7:40 pm

Just in additional, bloggers should also create their own sitemaps to get indexed by Google faster. I believe you can find instructions somewhere in the google webmaster link you have provided.

  23. Revellian on August 25th, 2007 7:41 pm

Sharon: Thanks Sharon! I find it hard to believe that blogger which is a google product makes it so difficult for bloggers to have all the cool things that come stock on a selfhosted wordpress blog. There is a reason for it. It’s all about google controlling their bloggers and keeping ones that don’t make them money on the botton

  24. Janice on August 25th, 2007 9:49 pm

Bobby, I felt relieved after hearing what you said. Thanks :)

  25. Revellian on August 25th, 2007 10:16 pm

Janice: Hopefully blogger’s developers will add all these features so people won’t have to go through all this

  26. Nihal on August 26th, 2007 10:16 pm

    Hi Bobby,

Thanks yet again for a wonderful post for the bloggers. I myself encountered similar issues in the beginning, and boy, does all these help out in the long run.

  27. Janice on August 27th, 2007 5:07 am

  29. Bush Mackel on August 27th, 2007 9:13 pm

Good reminders on the submission stuff. I try to remember to submit my sites every 6 months that way if the engines forget about me, they get a nice little reminder!

  30. Revellian on August 27th, 2007 9:14 pm

Bush Mackel: Great point! Everyone should do it once every six months! Sometimes I wonder if were really helping search engines to bury us by submitting

  31. Nihal on August 28th, 2007 12:51 pm

    Hi Bobby,

Sorry, but I just noticed that Janice is having some problems with adding Yahoo’s meta tag into her template and would like to suggest that she try this out - simply add a slash at the end, just before >.

    Hope this would help :)

  32. Revellian on August 28th, 2007 12:52 pm

Nihal: Thanks! Also I think people paste the code in the wrong place. Personally, I never edit a blogger template in blogger itself. I download the xml file and do all editing in a text editor. I use notepad++

  33. WaterLearner on August 30th, 2007 4:34 am

    Hi Bobby!

I have submitted mine. Thanks for this good post to guide bloggers to do so.

    Thanks & Blessings!

WaterLearner: You are so welcome! You have a great blog

  35. Mariuca on August 30th, 2007 8:07 am

Hi Bobby! Am glad to see ur site is ok!
After I submitted my site, Google asked me to verify my site, either using meta tags or create an html file. That’s what I meant ;) How do I create that html file in order to verify my site. Sharon was kind enough to teach me but am still looking forward to a complete, step-by-step instructions on this! ;)

  36. Revellian on August 30th, 2007 8:09 am

Mariuca: You can’t upload the html file because you are hosted by blogspot. I did my WGM site by adding a metatag line to my template. You should never edit your template in blogger. Download a backup copy of your template and store it in a folder. Then download a copy to edit. You can get a great free text editor from:
    http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/about.php
Edit your template only using this. After editing just upload the template and you’re done! Remember when you removed the nofollow from your template and you had to search all through it trying to find the right line? When using an editor you can simply do a search for the right line and it makes it easier. Google hopefully will change some things soon to make all this easier

  37. menopauseprincess on August 30th, 2007 10:47 am

    Hey Bobbie,

Was I the only one who couldn’t see your site for 2-3 days?

  38. Revellian on August 30th, 2007 10:48 am

Menopauseprincess: No, my site had some serious problems and was off line. My host was baffled by the fact that they couldn’t even log in to my database. I rebuilt my entire database from scratch and now all is well

  39. Sharon on August 31st, 2007 12:15 am

I am a big fan of both Blogger and Wordpress, but really, thee’s no comparison.

I just think if you like to blog, Wordpress is one of the easiest platform to use so you can have all these neat goodies.

And not just for sitemaps either.

  40. Revellian on August 31st, 2007 1:11 am

Sharon: I use both and it has helped me a lot knowing how to use them. Blogger should definetly have a built in sitemap
