Tales of Blogger-X

Who Are You?

Are you a leader or a follower? Are you a little of both? Do you project a fabricated image to psychologically manipulate the masses into believing your site is professional? Do you accept yourself for the person you really are, letting it shine through in every post? To have great blog in my humble opinion, it must be honest and full of heart!

We live in a world of images, reputations, money and lack thereof. All of these things are heavily reflected in the blogosphere and our daily lives. My good friend Karen from the philosophical blog Waterlearner asked me if I would write a post on self acceptance. Read the post that inpired me, Spiritual Facial. My good friends at NAFASG also helped inspire this article. Read their fascinating post, Don’t Just Watch, Observe! (make sure you watch the incredible video, you have to see this!) It’s been a while since I delved into the depths of the self and I couldn’t tell Karen no!

I will start by using this concept as it applies to blogging and how I perceive it from a multi-faceted detached state of consciousness. To see things for what they really are is one central idea in the structure of my blog. I use what I think of as motivic blogging improvisations. This is based on my life long studies of Jazz musical theory, Taoism and martial art philosophies.

When most of us start blogging, often it is a personal blog. That’s how I started. Other people have a reason for starting a blog like for instance, to make money or support a business. I have noticed some interesting things about the A-list blogs that most have in common. Let’s take a look at a basic time line in the life of a blogger. We’ll call him Blogger-X. This is a specific model to show you my point. It may or may not apply to you, but within, there is a lesson for us all. I am playing a bit of devil’s advocate to make my point, so don’t take it personally if you think of yourself!

The Tale of Blogger-X

Blogger-X starts out writing about his life and and his job. Then he meets some blogging friends. He participates in his first blogging meme and is no longer a web virgin. He gets tagged and re-tagged and triple tags all his buddies having all kinds of fun. He then gets a blogging award and starts thinking about making money on line.

Now that his on line cherry has been popped, he realizes through studying how the A-listers became successful, he wants to be one himself. He notices that A-listers don’t do memes or have friends like the rest of the bloggers.

He stops doing all memes, replaces his blogroll with one that only points to the big blogs, and ignores all the incoming links that don’t have page rank. He no longer cares about all those great friends he made because he is so much more important now. He fears that his newly manufactured and heartlessly fabricated reputation could lose it’s edge if people see a silly meme on his site. He is now a professional blogger who wants money and his blog is a business.

He no longer gives out links or cares about anyone unless they have a pagerank of 5 or better. If you want a link, he will sell you one. The public masses are now his sheep-like customers. Every post he writes is maximized for his niche as he rises higher in popularity . Tons of people trackback and link to every post he writes so that they too can be just like Blogger-X. And so on and so on.

His reputation and fabricated image are an illusion, using very similar mass-mind control and mass-hypnosis techniques that Adolf Hitler and Napoleon Bonaparte used. Yes indeed, he now makes a truckload of cash and works it hard, optimizing for every cent he can milk from whoever! Things are often not what they appear to be in the blogosphere! Watch Nafa’s video to see some real illusion.

I say phooey on you Blogger-X. I will never stop doing memes and I most certainly will NEVER remove my friends from my blogroll. Can you make money and have friends at the same time? Of course you can. One thing I truly cannot stand is having an A-list blogger (or someone who thinks they are) not reply to my comments. If I take 15 minutes to write a very meaningful comment and you snub me by replying only to the other high ranked commentators on your post, I will never read your blog again. Hire someone to answer the damn reply! There’s an image for you to fabricate! Create the illusion that you care! Of course we will all see through that and you’ll lose all readers who aren’t your sheep!

Honest Blogging Begins With Self-Acceptance

I accept all people from all races and religions and when I make a friend, I keep that friend! I met 2 new bloggers who happen to be incredibly high-ranked who impressed me by taking the time to give me attention and call me by name! Hey, that is what good blogging is all about! These 2 incredible bloggers are: Garry Conn and Tim Nash. Both of these guys are in my opinion, true experts and cool guys. I just met them both and will be studying their blogs. Garry is a master who has so many blogs it will make your head spin. Tim is just plain brilliant.

I want to thank Mark from MeAndMyDrum for introducing me to Garry (please go checkout Marks new header and logo, talk about sweet! Mark has a fantastic blog and has me hooked with his most refreshing approach!). I met Tim because I kept seeing his face in my MyBlogLog widget and wanted to see who he was! I was thinking, “Wow, Tim Nash reads my blog! How cool is that?”

A side note: Have you seen Paula, from Polliwog’s Pond, new look? (she is now an incredible redhead, oh baby!) She looks so beautiful, I just had to give a shout-out to her! I was floored when I saw her new avatar on mybloglog. I haven’t done my long overdue awards post Paula, but I thank you for the award! It’s coming and all of you who have given me an award, I have not forgotten!)

IMPORTANT UPDATE: Garry Conn has written something about me that is one of the most awesome things anyone has said about me. While most bloggers out to make (we all need money) completely ignore me and NEVER take the time to pay any attention, Garry has been given the Revellian dot com seal of approval for fantastic business integrity and blogging ethics! Read the great post he has written here: The Power of One Blog Reader. Thank you Garry Conn for being a class act and I look forward to a lasting friendship filled with happiness and success!

    Hi Bobby,

I like this part of your article “Honest Blogging Begins With Self-Acceptance”. When you mention that “i accept all people from all races and religions” it shows that you are a man who has exceptionally high regards or respect for all mankind, regardless of their backgrounds.

    ~We salute YOU! :!: :!: :!:  ~

Thank you, bobby for mentioning us and highlighting the video that we have featured in our post.

Nafa: Thanks so much! One of my biggest pet peeves in life is racism. Racism is a disease and is totally unacceptable for anyone to be a racist. Be proud of who you are, be proud of your heritage and accept the fact that we are all EQUAL! Thanks Nafa, I salute you!!!!!

To be honest, I don’t even bother with most A-List blogs. I’d rather read the real thoughts and ideas of a person than read tripe that’s been written for the sole purpose of placating the masses with highly marketable, keyword crammed, soulless content. *bleech*

  6. Revellian on September 25th, 2007 10:16 am

Dawn: Isn’t it ridiculous how people follow and imitate these people?

  7. Dawn on September 25th, 2007 10:34 am

You Wrote “Dawn: Isn?t it ridiculous how people follow and imitate these people?”

They way things are on the internet reminds me of the whole High School mentality. If the most popular kids in school started following a trend all sorts of people would jump in on it, no matter how ridiculous.

Once a person became “popular” in High School, they often wouldn’t bother with their old friends that they had since grade school anymore. They would throw away all their old, meaningful relationships and replace them with hollow, plastic friendships with people who’s public persona and reputation matched or exceeded their own. Just like the internet’s PR snobs.

Wow, I guess some folks really haven’t grown much since then. How very sad.

  8. Revellian on September 25th, 2007 10:36 am

Dawn: That’s how it is! I follow no one and neither so any of my friends. We feed off of each other and we stick together! I read a post on the Dosh-Dosh blog about how to get links from A-list bloggers; showing how to work an angle to gain a link. It was worded almost like you would gain a friend. That is mass-mind control no matter what the author really meant!

Since when does a person have to work an “angle” to gain a friend? I find it unbelievable how, when a blogger gains fame, they rid themselves of friends and gain even more popularity!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. Janice on September 25th, 2007 10:39 am

Thanks for sharing what you know abt the Blogger X. How I love the video from Nafa. Its really cool !! How easy & fun drawing is right?

Janice: Blogger-X is a metaphor. Nafa’s video is amazing. Did you previously know that the shapes of genitalia are hidden in childrens cartoons? (including all Disney films, Walt Disney was in real life, a perverse and sick weirdo).

  11. Random Magus on September 25th, 2007 11:02 am

Bobby it is this acceptance and a truly caring and helpful nature that you possess - that will take you to greater heights than these so-called ‘A’ list bloggers aspire to.

  12. Revellian on September 25th, 2007 11:09 am

Random Magus: If I ever attain a position of power, which I believe will happen, I will absolutely shock people with what I do. I will also take all my friends with me, and that my dear includes you! Thank you so much Amber!

  13. Brown Baron on September 25th, 2007 11:54 am

Very powerful article Bobby. Even someone who didn’t know you would see how passionate you are. It’s sad that there are people who forget that blogging helps you find your soul, not lose it.

  14. Revellian on September 25th, 2007 12:04 pm

Brown Baron: Thank you! Would you believe it took an hour to do my screenshot meme and 15 minutes to write this one? Go figure! If a person becomes an A-list blogger, their responsibility is even greater to be a compassionate person who touches lives in a positive way. If that’s not the greatest of all business ethics, then what is?

  15. Rolando on September 25th, 2007 2:53 pm

Boo to Blogger-X and hello Paula! We’re glad you won’t forget about us little people Bobby! That’s why you rock!

  16. Revellian on September 25th, 2007 3:55 pm

BloggerX just seems to be everywhere in both the blogosphere and the real world! I’ll stick with Paula instead!LOL  Thanks Rolando!!!!!

  17. Christy on September 25th, 2007 6:11 pm

    Great article as always Bobby!

I’m out to prove that you can be an A-List blogger, make lots of money blogging, and still be a caring and loving individual. This has been my hope from the start.

I found out today that I have a chance at being in an upcoming blogging documentary, and if I make it, perhaps I will have the opportunity to change some things in the blogoshpere.

Top blogger’s do not have to have an attitude to be successful! It is completely unnecessary! It’s my hope too Bobby to change things for the better.

  18. Revellian on September 25th, 2007 6:46 pm

Christy: Thank you!!!!! That is awesome Christy! I do believe you and I have the same goal in our blogging! It is exactly my dream to bring a completely fresh and friendly attitude into the light. My aim to to make the world a better place. I plan to change the world and do it with no ego and no attitude. I wish you the greatest of success and my respect for you is truly through the roof. You are a true professional and at the same time a great friend to everyone. Christy ROCKS!!!!!

  19. Amanda on September 25th, 2007 7:03 pm

I definitely think this is a very well written article and I really enjoyed the hones blogging begins with acceptance like the previous commentator.

  20. Revellian on September 25th, 2007 7:10 pm

Amanda: I know many bloggers may be offended by this post. They shouldn’t be, it is to make them think! Blogging brings people together from every part of Earth and we should all celebrate in this incredible “togetherness” that blogging brings to humanity!!!!!

  21. WaterLearner on September 25th, 2007 7:25 pm

    Hi Bobby!

Wow you are really fast! Thanks for mentioning my humble blog in your good post. I am honoured.

Your post is like a mirror that reflected the thoughts of so many bloggers! The Devil inside me really did think of using my blog to make money after I started receiving awards. You are really the Enlightened One in the Bloggers Realm!

But, like how I had shared with you earlier, my rational defeated the devil inside me when I did a measure of my own writing capability and my initial intentions for starting a blog! My blog is neither spiritual nor philosophical as you have always so kindly defined my shallow blog. I hope to live my life in Awareness. To learn to see the divine intentions behind all things that come my way in life. And I put up my blog not to teach but to share (mostly my pitfalls!) with others, so others would not make the same mistake that I had gone through.

The above comparison was a turning point for me. I also had some discussion with Janice about blogging for money. She had the same fears that I had - If we started writing too much for money AND did not handle with care, we would lose our dear friends in the bloggers world.

With the advice from Jan and a few days of thinking, I decided then that my humble blog shall be Ad-Free. You would see now that my blog is quite clean.

I aspire not to be an A-List Blogger in terms of Rank or Money-making. But an A-List Blogger in terms of establishing and maintaining friends and sharing my shallow thoughts to help others in any way I can.

    The Shallow Mind thought in a manner too disorderly;
Hence penning down this comments far too lengthy.

    Blessings to you Bobby!
Have a Good Day Ahead

  22. Revellian on September 25th, 2007 7:26 pm

Karen: I think you have taken humbleness to an extreme and it can cause an imbalance in self-confidence. Your blog is philosophical and you are a MUCH better writer than you currently believe. There is a big difference between self-confidence and humbleness. They balance one another. One thing I want to help plant in you is that you have the ability to write a great book. Please, stay with me on this journey and do not stray. Do not feel like I expect anything from you and write from your heart as you do on every post. In other words, just keep writing like you have been and know that you have a friend in me!

  23. Janice on September 25th, 2007 7:26 pm

Bobby, can you believe that I hardly watch cartoon as a child? I started to help my parents to do the housework since abought 10 or 11 years old up till I married … …I only watched it now with my own children. I know I missed a lot.

Btw, I wanted to send you a mooncake from Facebook yesterday on knowing that you haven’t “tried” it. The cartoon is so cute & the mooncake look so real. However, I’m a newbie there & I cant get it done. Sorry Bobby & bang my head for it :(
Its 9+am here, it should be around 5 or 6 pm over your side? Have a good dinner :):)

  24. Revellian on September 25th, 2007 7:47 pm

Janice: That is totally sweet of you! When I was a kid I liked to read a lot and was pretty much a bookworm nerd! Thanks for the mooncake! I found out that there is a Chinese bakery within driving distance from me that specializes in authentic Mooncakes! I’m going to go get me some very soon!

  25. WaterLearner on September 25th, 2007 7:48 pm

    Janice,

Facebook can send Mooncake? Yah .. I really feel very bad not sending a real mooncake for Bobby to eat yesterday.

  26. WaterLearner on September 25th, 2007 7:55 pm

    Haha Bobby!

“…Taking Humbleness to the Extreme” huh?

Shall I take it as a constructive criticism or a destructive compliment?

    Just joking!

I take it as an honest comment from our good Bobby to see my humble site make it big.

    Thanks Bobby!

  27. Revellian on September 25th, 2007 8:21 pm

WaterLearner: Of course it is constructive! At one point in my life, I would get highly offended if some had confidence. If someone said,”I am good at this.” I thought of them as having an ego problem. I would say things about myself like, “I am not worthy or I am not good at that.” I learned that I waas projecting a negative self image.

I think I am a good writer but I leave words like that for others to say or not to say. However, I found that it’s ok to be confident and believe in myself and go for my dreams. I thank God for Lao Tzu’s book “The Tao Te Ching” for being the source from which I draw wisdom. I live by the phrases: “He who displays himself does not shine” and “He who exalts himself does not find merit acknowledged”

Both of these phrases cannot be what I truly live by if I promote my blog, right? Wrong. People often misinterpret what is meant. Afterall, nothing exists - all things are becoming. We are all becoming and that describes you! It is the becoming that counts, not what we become!!!!!! Thanks Karen, there you go, making me think!

Bobby, this is an outstanding post and a message that we all need to pay attention to as bloggers and members of a community. It is a shame when you see success result in someone forgetting the people that have been there for them.

Outside of the Interweb, my closest friends are the guys that I grew up with and we have stuck together. That is the approach that I take online as well as without continued friendship all of the success in the world will feel very empty.

  31. Revellian on September 25th, 2007 10:33 pm

Derek: I agree! Thank you very much!!!! I think that if a notable high paid blogger took this approach, he or she could double their success! It’s so much more fulfilling to hang with true friends through thick and thin! Thanks for the WTF vote!

  32. Aaron Cook on September 25th, 2007 10:46 pm

Damn straight Bobby! Let’s hope that you and I forever stick to our guns on this subject!!!
IMHO, the path of Blogger-X is but a shortcut…and a pathetic one at that. And as readers become more and more like paying customers (as they inevitably will!) we’ll see these types of sell-out bloggers running into some major troubles.

And as these “customers” of the blogosphere become more and more knowledgeable and demanding, we’ll see that many of these sell-out bloggers end up closing their sites or moving elsewhere due to a lack of readership. Mark my words.

    Shine on,
    Aaron

  34. derek on September 25th, 2007 10:56 pm

Bobby, in my opinion it follows along with the thought/belief that those that are giving without expectation often receive more in return. You’re welcome for the WTF vote, I’ve also given it a stumble as I hope to see many people come across this post.

  35. Revellian on September 25th, 2007 11:00 pm

Yep, and that’s precisely what happens, IMHO. The Blogger-X blogs “leave” as soon as they get paid! For shame!

    Wow Bobby!

You could be describing me in the first paragraph, that’s right where I am now.
I am noticing that the “A-list bloggers” (how is that determined anyway?) don’t seem to have silly or fun stuff. I have been thinking there must be a way to blog and stay human, stay me. You told me that the niche would find me, and I feel like there’s a direction I seem to be going in, and you’re right–it seems to be finding me.
I like your site because you find a way to make this dry, technical stuff more easily accessible. I am happy you’re here Bobby!

I have said it before and I will say it again. While I am no fan of blogs about blogging, I always read your blog and enjoy your posts because you are so obviously a caring person who wants others to succeed, and who questions practices that established bloggers take for granted.

  53. Revellian on September 26th, 2007 5:29 pm

Ingrid: Thank you! This blog is about blogging ethics, friendships and conversation! You’re a caring person too! It almost seems that people expect those in positions of authority to not care! Isn’t that just crazy!

  54. Joe Cheray on September 26th, 2007 7:44 pm

Thank you for posting this. I just had a conversation with a friend today about being an ethical blogger and retaining a trusted base of followers. I want to stay true to who I am as a person outside the box I do not want to present a fake persona online. I have my pen name Wildheart but it is a pen name that I closely relate to and have used for ever. I only align myself with people who are genuine and authentic. If it means climbing the blogging ladder slower so be it. I would rather climb slow and have good friends in the blogosphere than risk good friendships just for the sake of ranking and getting ahead.

  55. Revellian on September 26th, 2007 7:46 pm

Joe Cheray: I want to point out that some famous bloggers show their pictures, have videos, respond to commentators and so on. However they are using their own actual persona to disguise their treachery. Ah…the ultimate illusion.

Cardiogirl: Thank you!!!!! It’s nice to meet you. I think we may have met once before, but I am not sure. We are all human beings and we are all equal. It’s when we think that we are better or worse than others that we are blinded from the truth!

  63. cardiogirl on September 27th, 2007 7:15 am

(Clears throat nervously) I can call myself a Revellian, right?

  64. Revellian on September 27th, 2007 7:34 am

Cardiogirl: Asolutely!!!!! Welcome, you are officially a Revellian!

  65. candy on September 27th, 2007 1:17 pm

I stopped reading here… ‘I say phooey on you Blogger-X.’ because it made me giggle… that’s so “Revellian.com” I love it!

  66. Revellian on September 27th, 2007 1:27 pm

Candy: Ha ha ha…I like it when you giggle

  67. candy on September 27th, 2007 1:28 pm

    Finished reading it…

You make so many valid points, Bobby. A blog is a direct reflection of a blogger’s personality (yes, even those of the a-listers you describe are showing themselves through their illusions). Your blog is a reflection of who you are. And you’re the man! How could anyone as cool as you be anything but successful?

    ::help… I’m becoming a revellian groupie:: :P

  68. Revellian on September 27th, 2007 1:35 pm

Candy: Wow…a revellian groupie? He he he…now you’re making me giggle! I want to be the anti-A lister. When it happens and the A-listers start paying attention, I will tell them that hollow friendships based on greed and a lust for money don’t interest me!

  69. Vascabruta on September 27th, 2007 6:50 pm

    Hey Bobby,
Your a refreshing Island in a sea of blogger-xers. You comments keep us grounded even if we are trying to make money at this. I agree wholeheartedly with you. Money comes and goes, but friends can be forever.

  70. Revellian on September 27th, 2007 7:36 pm

Vascabruta: That’s right! I believe you can make money and have friends at the same time! I am here to prove it!

Bobby, what a great post! I have met a blogger-X  . I didn’t know what to call them until now. Oh my gosh!!! I started taking it personal until I began to figure out that it wasn’t me it was them. Their blog started of as a personal blog, they used to do meme’s and even accepted some tags. Then all of that stopped. Their content became watered down with all of these pay per post and ‘how to’s’.
So, I said they can keep their ‘how to’s and whatever else they would ‘try’ to teach, I wouldn’t accept their advice anyway. With bloggers like you in the blogosphere it’s truly a breath of fresh air!

  73. Revellian on September 29th, 2007 4:34 pm

Lisa C: I don’t really mind if someone does a lot of pay per post reviews, etc. unless that’s all they do. As long any blog has an author who does participate in the community and make an effort with friends, they are doing it right. I think it’s all about the intention behind the blog.

The trait I like most is honestly connecting with and making real friends (even if you have a blog where every post is about cardboard boxes and their many sizes! Ha ha ha…a blog like that needs some posts about their lives and needs to do memes, etc.)

Being yourself and just being real counts the most! I know I can definetly count on you to do that! Thanks Lisa!!!!! It always such a pleasure to see your pretty face here!
