Why Most Niche Blogs Are Worthless
So you’ve started your blog and you’ve read the advice of the pros. Do you believe that by following the advice of big money making blogs, you will be rich? Most people who follow the advice of professionals will be right where they want you to be, beneath them. Niche is pronounced “nitch” in case you didn’t know. I used to think it rhymed with quiche…LOL!
You will remain beneath them especially if you try to make it doing it the way they did it. Sure, Problogger makes a lot of money, but you will have little chance of making any money by doing what he did to make it. You will need to saturate the Internet with keyword laden posts for 10 years or more to get only half of what he has.
Most Niche Blogs Are Boring
I can read the same exact information on 40,000 blogs from the same niche. I can get the same tips from anyone. That’s why I choose to get my tips from low ranked blogs. People these days are savvy and chock full of good information. Where do you get your blogging tips?
I am growing dependent on many low ranking blogs to supply me with information. Why would I read an A-list blog who doesn’t care who I am when I can get the same or better information from someone who does?
Most niche blogs are BORING. It’s the same information over and over and over! I support upcoming blogs because so many of them are not so strictly niche oriented. They do memes and hand out awards. Give an A-list blogger some award and you will be ignored. Wow, that rhymed!
Don’t Be Someone’s Punk Niche
Be your own person and take risks. Don’t follow the crowd behind all these A-list bloggers. Be a leader, not a follower. Write a little varied content. If every article you write is about making money, you will bore your audience to tears.
Read Personal Blogs and Write About Yourself
Most of my favourite blogs are personal blogs. I like people with personalities. If you write a tech blog, add some other types of articles. If you write a money blog, write some articles about your life. The same exact subject over and over will make me run from you!
Don’t Read All Blogs Only In Your Niche
If you do, you are someone’s little niche. My blog is about blogging ethics. I NEVER read blogs about ethics nor do I link to them. Why don’t I? Because I plan on OWNING the niche not following the pack.
Answer This Question
Let us hypothesize that you are going to buy tickets to a concert. There are two lines. One ticket booth has 175,000 people in line. The other has 5 in it’s line. WHICH LINE WILL YOU STAND IN TO GET THE TICKETS?
Are you somebody’s niche?
The Niche Rap
By following the crowd
You think you’re gonna be rich
You ain’t never ever gonna be
’cause you’re somebody’s niche
I’ll be a son-of-a-niche…LOL!

I do agree that in some blogs that I have encountered, the tips given in point form can be found anywhere. And it was sad to be treated like nobody even when I made sincere efforts to give my point of views.
That’s why I relate to blogs that truly write with a genuine heart. Such blogs are not difficult to identify.
Bobby, I have to apologize that my visits to your good blog has not been as frequent as in the past. Due to my work demands. But your good blog is one of my favourite must-visit blogs.

“Don?t Read All Blogs Only In Your Niche”
Since I don’t really have a niche (besides personal), I read a wide variety of blogs…it’s been an excellent way to build networks and every once in awhile, I get an idea from a tangent while reading someone else’s completely unrelated post, haha.

It’s so funny to be reading this at this time Bobby. I am thinking of starting another blog, a purely money blog. I love my friends and my blog and the life it’s taking on. I don’t know if I can take that in a money direction and retain the homey feeling.
Your post has given me something to think about (as usual)

Anyhoo, you’ve touched on something I’ve had in the back of my mind. A struggle, really, as my blog is as you describe, something that doesn’t really have a niche unless you count eclectic as a niche. But I view it as a magazine in a way, or TV news show where you go to find out about or discuss about this and that. I’m okay with niche blogs, but what I enjoy most is answering the question, “What will I find today?”

I have quite a few niche blogs, alternative health, weight loss, healthy recipes, they don’t receive as many commenters as Vegan Momma and I wanted it that way if not I would spend a too much time commenting, lol. I honestly don’t have that amount of time. I do get a lot of emails from my readers for those niche websites. However those websites are extremely important I think I separate myself from many within my niche in that I’m not giving them appetizers I supply recipes that I use (cooking) freely give out natural recipes (alternative healing) along with a lot of information about ways people can reclaim their health. That takes commitment. The one thing I did not like about some websites like ProBlogger was they constantly fed “piece meal” they did not give all the information and you can find the same information on a website that is not as popular. The way I run my business is the same way I operate my websites. I treat my bloggers aka clients with respect. I listen to what thay have to say and in many cases I have made adjustments. Everyone needs to be heard and even if it takes a lot of time I will listen and respond whether you comment on my blog or send me an email. That’s how I operate. I get a few hundred emails on a daily basis and here I thought my mail would go down when I went into business for myself. Great Article Bobby!
People Listen to what Bobby is saying and realize that the A-List bloggers are not going to pass on the ‘secrets to their success’ to you no matter what they might tell you. Do you really think they want to create competition for their own meal tickets? Of course not!
I also totally agree while some niche blogs are interesting (I’ve read some great cartoon ones and such) the majority are deathly dull. There are ten billion blogs on SEO, Money Making, Ect. but there is only one you! That’s why personal blogs are so memorable and fun to read!

Revellian,I don’t read the website because I knew they weren’t telling everything. To be honest I don’t read any of the make money online websites because I’m just not interested a lot of the stuff I read, in my opinion, is just common business sense or it should be.
I’ve followed the practices that I use in my business and I have done fairly well via affiliate marketing. I’ve only started a few months ago. I honestly won’t go to someone who gives me piecemeal because I don’t do that. I’m confident that I can figure out a lot by research, going to selected mentors when I have questions, and by trial and error. I read a lot about affiliate marketing and then followed up with one of my blog buddies who is very successful. That is how they make their living. However you won’t hear them writing about how much money they make. I know they make more than some of the ones that write about how they make money online.
That person, in my opinion, is a A lister. They have reached the top and regularly give back to their community by responding via comments and email. They responded to my email within hours when I asked specific questions about a few affiliate marketing programs. They are always friendly. The difference with her was she was willing to assist when I asked a few questions. She actually responded to my email not everyone will. That impressed me. I respected them more because of it. I try to do the same when people contact me. Most people contact you because they are looking for some type of feedback. I try to give that to them. We mutually respect each other and visit each others communities quite often. If you notice some of the probloggers say they don’t make most of their money from their make money blogs. Why am I seeing people emulating their make money blog? Personally I don’t think they are branding themselves correctly. FInd your own style and find a niche that you enjoy and be the best in what you do.Opal Tribble/Vegan Momma’s last blog post..Bloggers Adding Beauty To The Blogosphere

On average people stay on my alternative healing website for six minutes. I created that along with the cooking website because
Of course there are a lot more niche websites out there than make money websites for example some people look for websites that focus on one thing. I know I do
When it comes to information about photography or lets say information about toxic chemicals found in everyday products those “niche websites” are great because all the information is in one place.
Mine were created because of the conversations I had with people in real life that I consult with about health/natural healing and with some of Vegan Momma’s readers. I’m very passionate, and knowledgeable, about those topics so I truly enjoy having a space where that is my main focus. Sure I could write about that nonstop on vegan momma but I would lose people that aren’t looking for a one topic websites.
I saw what I did not like on other websites that write, for example, alternative healing, and I made sure I included that information on my website. I still have a lot more to add. The feedback has been very positive.
I include a lot of free recipes on that website everything from natural shampoo, floor polish, air fresheners, insect repellents, etc., They all have a few things in common they are all natural, they are a lot better on our environment, and they are free. You don’t have to purchase a subscription or buy a book to learn and use the information I have provided. I look at it as on online resource library. It’s a blog now but It’ss getting converted into a static website.. In the future I will create an ebook I’ll offer two. A free version and a paid version. I already told my reader about that. The response has been very positive.
My readers ask me where I purchase my ingredients. Some of them want to make their own not everyone wants to buy from me and that is fine. I enjoy helping others. I have an affiliates page. I’ve used the companies on that page for years. My readers trust me. I think, for some, that is their way of thanking me for supplying all that free information.
I honestly don’t think affiliate marketing isn’t silly and here’s why..
With my business I use direct marketing and affiliates. Readers that purchase from my affiliates don’t pay more because they went through an affiliate. I’m able to reach more people simply by having affiliate marketers.
I’m a small business owner what their friend says has more of an impact on them than I. They have a relationship. If the customer uses their referral code I receive less. Amazon, and a few of the other businesses I’m an affiliate with work the same way. Regardless if a person purchases from the website or via a search or “Recommended”products tab. They pay the same price.
My products are in a few local stores. It took a lot of hard work on my part to get them there but I did it. I would be unable to have sold as much of my natural beauty product line without my affiliates or stores.
One way I make a large amount of my purchases with big companies is via affiliate. I know what I’m looking for and will support someone, if I can, who is an affiliate. Recently one of my readers, on Vegan Momma. recommended a product. I followed up with them via email and told them to give me their affiliate code. I also linked them to the affiliate sign up page in case they did not have one. I wanted to give them a % of that sale. I don’t think they were an affiliate when I contacted them but they were afterwards. That, for me, was just another way I was able to thank a reader for giving me some much needed information,

Maybe we are all just planning and niching a little too much…
To me the beauty of blogs is conversation.
Your blog is one of the best examples of someone who not only writes, but engages after the fact. Making money is great, but it seems to distract a lot of people from the power of the blog – to connect with more like-minded, interesting and inspiring people and communities than ever before.
Personally that excites me a lot more than a click on an ad or by-the-numbers content
S.

Hi Bobby,
Just discovered your great blog via Trinity’s… and I got hooked straight away – if only I had more time to read! I really like this post in particular. I’ve been blogging for nearly 2 years, and so far I’ve resisted all temptations to even attempt making money with it. Blogging is my creative outlet as well as a valve for built-up steam, occasionally just a time-waster (mine as well as the readers’!) I’ve had a few (very few, I think 2 LOL!) requests by people who wanted to put advertising on my blog. No way…
In my very humble opinion it’s sad how commercialised the blogosphere has become. I’ll run a mile from blogs that attempt to sell me something. And I’ve seen a couple of perfectly readable and enjoyable blogs become cluttered with pay-per-post entries as their owners started smelling money.
I guess this is slightly off-topic – my blog is meant to be MY niche, I simply blog for the blogging’s sake (though it has become a very tiny niche for people looking for news about the very tiny island I’m living on)! Probably this comment explains why I’ll die a poor person.
Oh, and thank you for explaining the pronunciation of niche… I used to think of it as rhyming with quiche too LOL!

I just don’t want people to get a wrong impression about everyone that has a niche we aren’t all bad and some of us do have good websites. My websites have a lot of articles my affiliates have a separate page.

Hi Opal! Very true! Most of the really big money blogs ($10,000 or more per month) are just giving you tidbits so they can sell you something. I have no false misconceptions that I’ll be rich anytime soon through blogging. While there have been some people who have made it big in months, they are the rare exceptions. I read some niche blogs. What I can’t stand are the money blogs who keep writing the same stuff as all the others!

Thanks Mitchell! So many people hop on board trying to do the same thing that 10 million other people are doing. It seems to me that “making money” or “marketing” are too general to even be considered a niche. I always ask, “what are you selling” when I look at some of these big money sites. Like John Chow. What is John Chow selling? He’s selling a line of B.S.!!!!!
I just don’t see how or why anyone would click an ad on any site. If I ever did click an ad, it wouldn’t be on ProBlogger’s site! He is now a PR 4 site…LOL!!!!!!!!!
#42 by Revellian at October 25th, 2007

I guess I just don’t understand how ‘making money’ is a niche. It’s so general. Let’s say I clicked an ad on a site (which I never do simply because I see them like TV commercials, it’s time to make a sandwich or use the bathroom) and I get to some making money blog. The 1st thing I would do is immediately leave. If I paid for ads on other sites for my blog, what would they do when they got here? That’s my point, they would leave. I’m not selling anything. Neither are 90% of the niche blogs. Problogger isn’t really selling anything. If I clicked an ad and arrived at his site what am I there for? Am I supposed to click his ads? It’s really kind of silly. I think affiliate marketing is silly. I think most folks who want to buy something are going to go to e-bay or Amazon.com, not my blog to pay a possibly higher price so I can make money!I’d love to have a rock solid niche site. But I would want to sell something tangible. Something I can hold in my hands with my brand name on it. I have always wondered what most niche blogs are selling as ridiculous as my question is. They really aren’t selling anything! They are selling themselves and that is all I see. The way I see marketing is the old fashioned way. If I sold cookies and my cookies were delicious, people will buy them. Affiliate marketing doesn’t necessarily work that way. It seems you need a real product, a book or something YOU have created to really be successful. You don’t though. The web is strange in many ways!

I don’t read any niche blogs that I know of. My site for example, doesn’t have a niche. Perhaps I have an objective but I have been extremely unsuccessful in that objective. I won’t give up easily though!

You are doing your affiliate marketing the right way. Most sites I see on the “who’s making the most money blogging” lists don’t really offer products of any kind. I don’t think all affiliate marketing is silly, but some of it is. I really cannot participate in it in a way that will generate any sizable income… yet.
You have a solid base from which to work. One realization I’m having is that for me to feel good about making money I need a real reason to make it. Making money for the sake of making money is unappealing to me. It seems like all the people making $10,000 or more per month (at least the ones I’ve seen) are not selling anything but a pipe dream.
