Hi Bobby - this comment is way late for your post but I'm finally getting around to checking a bit of archives. I love this post and although I'm not trained in nutrition like you are, all the research I've done since I was diagnosed with breast cancer definitely supports what you are saying. I tend to only use calcium and Vitamin D supplements (those are to combat the effects of the anticancer and thyroid medications I am on). I don't take multivitamins because it forces me to make better food choices so I can try to get all my nutrients from my food. I believe that is the best way to get your vitamins in most cases, but it may make sense for some people to take multivitamins. I'm not dissing them, it's just my choice for me. I don't consider myself a health fanatic as I am far from perfect and am overweight for my height, but I have definitely decided that I would do my best to make sure what I put in my body from now on has some type of benefit.

Oh, and the best way, in my opinion, to get some unsweetened chocolate into your diet I think is to put two tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa into a smoothie with nut milk (or other nondairy milk or even water) and a frozen banana! A frozen ripe banana is sweet enough on it's own that it makes the whole smoothie palatable, even delicious. It may require a little getting used to for some, but I took right to it because I gave up loads of sugar in the beginning when I first changed my diet. :) Here's to good eats!

Hi Eric, I actually met a group of cannibals from Australia who were here as part of a musical group. Pork was served as part of a meal and they kept wondering what nationality the person was we were eating. I told them it was pork. They said no, it was human. I think they were more used to wild boar and perhaps hadn't tried regular pork. I simply lost my appetite

You can't stop eating chocolate... you are so right. I am trying to get back on track and eat healthy until X-mas. I just eat what I eat on holidays. Bobby, did you make the human / pork comparison? Ohh man!!!

Hi Bobby! You're a health food junkie?? I'm a little embarrassed to say that I'm a junk food lover! I have to have my chocolate every day.... but the good thing is that I drink unsweetened green tea every day. Does that get a nod of approval from you?

I'll try out some of your tips!! I want to be healthy just like you!

I had heard it but I didn't really know whether to believe it. I'm so used to the sweetness of chocolate that I think I would find it hard to drink it unsweetened...although I suppose it's probably yet another acquired taste. Like anything, if you take out the bad stuff for long enough, you'll get used to it. I never add sugar or salt to food and I can't taste a difference but anyone who uses a lot of sugar or salt would probably find it revolting (like my partner, it took him a good while to adjust to it!)

Thanks Clairec23! I haven't had a cold or flu in well over 10 years. I will tell you how in an upcoming post.

A little sweetener, milk or lemon won't hurt a thing. Did you know that both chocolate and coffee have similar antioxidants? Chocolate is actually good for you, it's just the sweet part that isn't! Long ago, chocolate was popular in a hot beverage form unsweetened. Nowadays, people are less likely to eat or drink unsweetened chocolate

Perfect timing for this post, I've decided enough is enough and I need to get healthy. I've been really lazy and lax about eating (and drinking) right lately. I've never been an angel about healthy food but I do need a bit more balance, I've been coming down with things a lot lately. I can't seem to shake it off anytime I get sick. I'm blaming it on a lack of good food.

You're spot on about the Green Tea by the way. I mention that in particular because lots of people won't try it. I like it but it is an acquired taste, you have to get used to it, particularly if you drink a lot of ordinary tea and coffee. I don't use sugar in it either, I think that would spoil it. I tend to use milk though...just a tiny drop but still.
