Bobby: I am with the parent company that issued the franchise to your former employer. We don't condone any of the practices you described in your blog and can do something about it. Send me more specifics. Thanks.

AAMCO Owner here:

Not every AAMCO fits the experience described above.

Most AAMCO's (not all, but most) are decent small businesses that try very hard to please the customer.

Most, just like mine, believe in honestly assessing the vehicle and determining the problem (if there is a problem), and the best way to fix that problem, without a preconceived notion of what that outcome should be.

AAMCO's Customer Service Manager school (CSM school) does require memorization and honestly, having been in sales all my life, I hate to memorize because it feels fake.

I learned a long time ago, the best way to sell is to first sell yourself, then your company and finally, after you've accomplished the first two, sell your product or service.

AAMCO's CSM school and the memorization they require, in the context of taking someone who has no experience in the Transmission industry and trying to get them ready to successfully go back to a center, is okay as a way to provide the newbie with a sales track to run on.

But that's it.

Well, let me share my experience.. I've recently been (supposedly)hired at an AAMCO.. Though it's going on 3 weeks and i havent seen a cent, or a W2, it pales in comparison to the "Program" they have in store for you... They are smart, they know how to get you in, and slowly lay it on you, whats about to happen to you..

You are meat grinded through psychological breakdown when you go to their "Customer management training".. Which they sent me to in Sacramento California... These people are there to break you down mentally, militarily, and hopefully mold you into the robot they want you to be by ridiculing people in front of the class, A well known tactic is, throw EVERYONE out of the class and require that you recite in PERFECT verbatim, their fake robotic 100 paragraphs.. They KNOW you cannot achieve their standards, Maybe Brad Pitt could, he's an actor after all... They doc you 3 points for substituting the word "You've" for "You have".. 2 for the "You have" and 1 for not saying "You've".. They require a 75% accuracy .. Whereas, someone just coming from flipping burgers, might actually learn a few things about service writing, they're service managers will always perform less than an experienced one...

On to their sales tactics... They quote a rebuild, without a torque converter.. YOU NEVER SELL a tranny without the torque converter!! But now they have you by the balls.. Your transmission is apart, and $700 in Torque converter, tranny cooler, planetary gear ETC is added to your bill.. NOW, i can understand the planetary gear, ITS INTERNAL you cant see it but, the Torque converter has to be replaced 99% of the time.. They don't tell you that til after the initial sale...

No more ranting but, AAMCO doesnt work for the employee of the customer... In ALL my 20 years service writing and bringing in 95% of the customer off the phone, I NEVER thought i'd get caught up in something like this.. It's my worst nightmare to be robotic and ingenuine and dishonest to the customer.. Which is why i'll be talking my last time to the owner...

A good service writer knows how to take care of the customer and KEEP them, without vague dishonesty, without the idea that a customer is something like a rat you guide through a maze...

Too many ugly things in my 3 weeks with AAMCO to list, along with the daily, "We're gonna make you what we want you to be" Thats what the owner has said to me seven times since i've been here..

"For $3000.00, the guarantee should be for a few years, not 90 days."

It was around $3,000 total, for both transmissions. The first one cost around $1,500 and that's what had the 90-day warranty. For the second one (about 120 days later) I talked them down to $1,200. Still a total rip-off as I had nothing but troubles with that tranny too. No matter how you look at it, AAMCO sucks!

Eric...I understand! Does a construction worker who works 80 hours per week deserve to make less money than a basketball star? Hahaha...NO!!!!!!!! If the world were filled with Bobbys....sports stars would make $35,000 per year base salary and play for the love of the game

How can someone find a "good" honest transmission repair shop? Each town should have some type of ranking system that is stamped on their front door and tells people where this shop is rank on the integrity level.

Bobby, I have been in the same boat. I did a few sales jobs in my 20's and had some gut feelings that the way that I created income was not always respectable. One instance in particular still hits my conscious to this day ... I think "earning" your money has more respect than most will give.
I am not the richest man by any means, but my heart is OK with everything that transpires in any given work week.
