Winning Attitude Comes From Within

One thing I rarely discuss on this blog is my experience in selling and closing deals mostly because I became disgusted with the way most money blogs operate on line. You know the deal - you plaster endless ads all over your blog and pray for people to click them so you can make .05 cents. Then you focus your content and hone in on keywords trying to follow the advice of “experts” who will teach you how to do it efficiently. Hasn’t it crossed your mind that these experts are just wanting your traffic so that you may click their ads? Overall, it’s a very poor way to make money. Most bloggers make like $100.00 per year, but many lie about those figures so they will seem more successful than they are. I hope this article will help you understand something that can help you in many ways - not just for making money, but in life as well.

Money Attracts Money?

In the summer of 2004, I was working as a bartender in the Grand Casino Resort swimming pool cabana. It was the highest paying job I have ever had for the short time I worked there. I made $27,000.00 in tips alone - in four months! I learned some unusual lessons about money while working there. We had this gigantic glass tip bucket sitting on top of the bar. A regular sized tip jar would have been far too small.

The first busy day we had there, the tip jar was filled to the top in cash. It was so full, it was obscene. It was rude, tacky and was in every customer’s face. The three bartenders (myself included), left with over $500.00 each that day. Our manager told us she thought (yes, I had a female manager who was one of the best I have ever had - her name was Ruth Crane) that the tip jar was offensive to her. She asked us to empty it into a bag when it got so full so we wouldn’t have this insanely money stuffed beast in everyone’s faces.

So, the next day, we did just that. We were actually busier that day than the day before. We emptied the colossal cash bucket just as she had asked. I left work with $90.00 that day - ouch! I took in over $17,000.00 but only made $90.00 in tips - Strange indeed. Why was that? It seemed logical that an empty tip jar would attract lots of tips…right? No, it doesn’t work like that, or so we thought. We talked to the manager and told her what happened. She agreed that if it hurt our tip rate, we should go back to putting the overstuffed jar back up - shoving it in everyone’s faces. We did just that and our tip rates exploded through the roof!

Attitude Was The Real Reason

Was the tip jar being packed or empty the real cause of success or failure - or was something else at work? I suspected it was something else. I talked it over with the other bartenders and we decided to try something based on my suspicion. I thought, because we had that huge tip jar out, loaded with cash, it affected our attitudes during work. We got used to seeing all that money and were much friendlier and enthusiastic with our customers.

We started keeping the tip jar completely empty at all times, but paid attention to our attitudes and customer service 100% more. We pumped each other up and kept ourselves excited throughout the day having loads of fun. We learned to make even more massive amounts of money without even noticing how much we had made. We depended on ourselves, not that tip jar. I earned the well deserved nickname, “Cabana Bobby” because I loved my job so much. It was lots of fun. I worked wearing comfortable shorts and a tank top, looking at girls in bikinis all day - all while making great money.

It’s definitely not that money attracts money. A winning, enthusiastic and positive attitude is what really attracts money. This really defines what people think of as the “law of attraction”. Originally, this idea comes from ancient India. It is a concept from Hinduism, which is by the way, the oldest known religion. I have studied similar ideas from my life long study of yoga and it’s inherent philosophies. I am just now beginning to truly understand what I learned.

Although my blog is not about how to make money, I thought this cool little story might be beneficial to anyone, regardless of what kind of blog or website you have. True success and a winning attitude really does come from within. We proved that working in this simple job. We learned that we had been depending on that full jar to make us money, while the real solution was inside ourselves. It’s really amazing to think about.

It Comes From Within

My wonderful friend Morgan, told me that when looking for love, we must look within to find it. I wanted to thank her because she has really helped me on numerous occasions. Though this money making example is not about love - the same principle is at work. The answers truly do come from within, in every area of life. It’s so cool how someone can say such a little thing that has a huge, resonating effect. It has helped me piece together many things I already know, but didn’t truly understand. You see, we made huge money without looking for it. It’s much like people saying you find love when you’re not looking for it. Life is just funny that way.

I believe it has a lot to do with being relaxed internally and not being desperate. You must be at peace with yourself inside. If you’re not, people notice - maybe only subconsciously, but it does have a powerful effect on your attitude and how people perceive you. Your personal vibe is more powerful than you may believe. You must learn to be aware of it and how to control it - from within.

Just for your information, the Grand Casino resort was destroyed by hurricane Katrina. The storm lifted the gargantuan casino up and slammed it onto the middle of highway 90 in Gulfport, Mississippi. It was an absolutely unbelievable sight to behold. I thought I would show you some awesome pictures of the casino. I live only around 7 miles from this location. I am a hurricane Katrina survivor.

An aerial view of the casino dropped into the highway by the storm. The building is humongous.

Above left is before the storm, right is after. Note how all the trees were annihilated

Booby….you are so right in regards to a winning attitude in EVERYTHING. The way you feel and think has so much more of an effect on anything outside of ourselves. Sometimes I forget this and find myself in the midst of ANOTHER internal struggle. But I know that it is always good because in the end I always find myself and what I truly want and desire from looking within.
Although I am strong in some areas others I’m STILL working on…I’m told it’s a process, much as life is…and that If I seek the answers I will ultimately find what I am seeking out, often enough it always leads me to a lace of understanding and awareness of the role I play within my own life.
Thanks for reminding me that it all begins and end with the way you feel and the way you act upon those feelings.
    HUGS

I like your approach, Bobby, on the tip jar. I would not have expected the results from the removal of cash in that way.

Very interesting observations! I’m glad you did that experiment. It’s nice to see that it was an attitude that attracted the money because THAT is something we all CAN control (whereas we couldn’t all instantly get money to attract more money). But also a good lesson to apply in many areas of life - certainly not just to get more money. LOL@ “Cabana Bobby!” I’m so glad you weren’t hurt or left homeless by Katrina. I didn’t realize where you lived. Yikes! Seeing how that casino moved was really freaky. The power of those storms is awesome. Stay safe!

Morgan! One of my favourite ancient Chinese sayings is “do not seek answers; seek to understand the questions” which describes the truth. I suppose if we have the answers, we no longer have questions ending the process of becoming in some sense. The process is the answer, and it never ends; or that any answers that do come only lead to more questions…lol. When you first told me it comes from within, my mind was so far from thinking that - I was in a different place altogether. How can I put this…looking within doesn’t necessarily bring answers, but brings inner peace so we can accept and understand our own reality. Thanks for pointing back to the path, I think I got lost in the dark forest for a little while! Hugs to you Morgan!

Hi Mark! At first, all we knew is that if we kept the jar empty, we made very little money. If we let it fill up and didn’t empty it, we made unbelievable money…it was strange. Later on, after we just had superior attitudes, we forgot about the jar altogether. We took the Zen approach - the jar doesn’t exist - the jarless jar…hahaha! I believe it is a blogger’s shining attitude that determines success even more than content or mass e-mailings…hehe

Hi Teeni! I don’t make anywhere close to that kind of money …I am so poor right now! That job is gone forever, but was great while it lasted. The house I lived in was washed away in the storm and I lost nearly everything I owned. I stayed at my mother’s house during the storm as mine was on the beach. My mother and I were almost killed…it was the most horrific day I have ever lived through. Losing my belongings changed me as a person. I actually used to be materialistic. After the storm, I learned what is important…family and friends….everything else is irrelevant

    First, hello to Cabana Bobby!
I agree whole-heartedly that attitude and a personal “shine” are not only an attraction, but also are contagious. I have noticed that on my best days, when I project the best self image, and a happy personality, that people around me will react to this in the same manner. Take a room full of positive personalities and it is mutiplied exponentially.
I also believe that the same holds true in the opposite fashion … misery loves company.
Morgan is a prime example of someone that really has her head on strait, and someone who understands what gaining a winning attitude is all about. As humans (very imperfect as we all are), this is truly an ongoing process.
The pictures of the before / after Katrina are remarkable. I still am awestruck by natures massive force.

Take care Bobby, this was a really great post - and I really liked the message.
Let’s all make an effort to be the people that spread smiles this week.

Hello Dr.Speedcat! Would you care for a high octane pina colada in a massive bucket with a straw? You might need it if your golf game is a little shaky…haha! I dated a girl one time who kept saying, “You think I’m ugly don’t you…you think I’m stupid don’t you.”
I told her I didn’t but she insisted I did. Eventually, it drove me crazy so I stopped talking to her. It really can be hard to stay positive all the time - actually, I like being miserable now and again…hahaha!!!!

LGH is delicious! I was just kidding about Fergie, she was awesome the other night…I was surprised at how good she was

Awww…thanks Haney, that means a lot to me!!!! So your job now isn’t that fun? I have had jobs in horribly negative environments where you leave each day feeling terrible. The job I have now is not positive at all but I manage - barely.

Bobby, that’s an interesting insight on the tipjar. The same thing would apply to streetartists. I notice they always have fairly empty hats, suitcases etc. and I always suspect (and sometimes see) that they take out money to give the impression they haven’t made much yet. It would seem they have been getting it wrong al this time.

And you’re right about the positive attitude; on the days I feel happy & positive I get so much more done from other people & everything just runs smoothly. Also, I seem to get more wolf whistles….

Hi Bobby, it all sounds so tedious! I have a few ads at my blog but I certainly don’t plaster endless ads all over my blog or focus my content and hone in on keywords trying to follow the advice of “experts”. Too much work for me la he he.. I am however concentrating on my paid posts, they’re my main source of money from blogging and I have fun doing them too! Happy Monday Bobby! :)

Interesting post! I read a study recently demonstrating the same phenomena. It found that not for profits received far more cash donations when the cash box was already full. I guess when people see a lot of money, they perceive giving as something you are supposed to do or something that is popularly done. It also found that much LESS money was given when there was a sign displayed asking for money.

Hi Robin! I always hated those give money or please tip signs. I have instructed customers in a casino to tip me on many occasions. I never made a customer mad by doing that either. When they got bad service from waitresses and complained to me, I told them to tip the waitress at least a dollar for every drink they received…hahaha

    Hi Bobby,

I loved this post … and it actually helped inspire me in my blogging. Yesterday I unsubscribed and unfollowed (on twitter) just about every Internet Marketing/Blog about Blogging site that I had been reading. I “hid” quite a few of my posts on Success with Todd (anything not having to do with Leadership and Personal Growth), and I removed almost all of the advertising.

In a way, I’m going to try my own online “tip jar” experiment. Focus totally on attitude, and not worry about directly asking for compensation … just show people through my words and actions that I’m already “rich” (no matter what the numbers in my bank account might say at any given moment in time).

I’m glad I was lucky enough to find your blog. Lately especially, many of your posts really get me thinking … thanks.

On a different note … I’ve been to the Grand Casino. I live in Biloxi (on Pass road) for almost a year, back in the 90s when I was going to weather forecasting school at Keesler. I have fond memories of Mississippi.

    Keep the great stories coming.

    Talk to you again soon,
    Todd

Hi Todd! I don’t think there’s anything wrong with Internet marketing, it’s just become so saturated with people all doing the exact same thing. The only thing I make any money from is adsense, which is only visible if you look at single post. This keeps my bounce rate down and prevents smart pricing. I earned $171.00 in one year…hahaha. It’s not much but it pays for my hosting. I sold one blue host account but have yet to be paid.

I think you really have to be selling something to make real money on line (not just hoping for clicks), and with so many people doing the same thing, it takes way too much time and effort for me to even try right now. For me, blogging is something else entirely than when I first started. It has become more about the friends I’ve made and my personal journey through life. It’s much more fun than ever and I have no time line or schedule to adhere to. I have built a small but dedicated following and I try my best to do the same for others.

There’s no telling where blogging will take any of us. I learn more everyday and being relaxed about it, I can discover new things. I do believe that an original approach will yield better results than doing what everyone does. Wherever you take your blog, you have a dedicated reader and friend in me. If you can inspire people, you can do anything - something I’ve always believed.

I spend most of my blogging time getting to know different people and become friends with them. So far, it has been a good choice for me. Thanks so much Todd!!!!

Hi MP! It’s nice to see you  Yes, I am unfortunately working in a casino bartending job. I am not making anywhere close to the amount I made as described in this article though. Hi Bobby, what an amazing story. I’ve read so much about like attracting like, and it seems this is a shining example. I believe that your you and your co-workers collective vibration was pretty high, due to your attention on feeling good. Feeling good has its rewards, besides just plain feeling good.

And all the while feeling anxious, creative a low vibration, which results in no money.
It is indeed a practice, its so easy to have your emotions take a nose dive due to some outside influence. Now I know why i hate the news.
