One thing I really like to do on each of my Bobby’s Batch posts, is that each have a unique title and an article included before the links are listed. I have a few blogging observations this week I’d like to share with you.
About Pagerank
I have many pet peeves about blogging and I believe them to be rooted in my personal sense of ethics. One area most bloggers do not understand is concerning Google pagerank. I’m often perplexed when I see a personal blogger (or any blogger) displaying their pagerank in their sidebar – it’s obvious they have no idea what pagerank is or why it exists. Pagerank determines your ability to be found through a google search while they are looking for answers of some type. If you write a personal blog, especially about your life, etc, then pagerank is absolutely meaningless to you.
No matter how high it is, you will not be found through a search unless they enter your blog title in the search bar – how many people will ever do that?. This is especially true if you have a non-niche blogspot blog. To me, any stat in your sidebar, is much like wearing a clothing item with price tags hanging off of it – it’s just a little tacky. It’s like wearing a t-shirt with your college diploma imprinted on it.
Much of my outlook stems from martial arts, Zen and musical instrument playing/building. One of my favorite comparisons is a martial arts teacher wearing a black belt with ten stripes on it and the word ‘Master’ written in big letters across his back. Any real martial artist knows this probably means he cannot fight nor has any conception of martial art combat. I think what I’m saying is it is what’s inside that matters, just like my perception of people. Maybe I’m a little too uptight or hardcore about this, but I’m trying to get over it.
I am a musician and have been playing stringed instruments for decades. When I hear modern pop musicians, the music itself has become irrelevant – much of it written on a PC program using patches and samples. The music is usually written around a star vocalist by someone else, not by the singer. There are very few musical artists that actually write the music for their own songs. Nowadays, a great guitarist or drummer has become irrelevant. I cannot name hardly any gifted musicians in today’s popular music scene. They are simply a rare breed. The ones who do make it are extremely lucky. Just look at rap music. I am not saying that all rappers don’t have talent, what I’m saying is that the music backing their rap is ridiculous and requires absolutely no talent to compose. An artist who doesn’t write their own music (actually compose it and write in down in musical notation) should not be allowed to win a Grammy award. If they had this rule, 95% of all Grammy winners wouldn’t even qualify for an award. It’s like McDonald’s hamburgers: just because they’ve served billions doesn’t mean they taste good. They are like fast food TV dinners. I cook my hamburgers at home…you know, the ones that really are good.
Views on Entrecard
Lately, I’ve found my blogging, or how I visit other bloggers being taken over with things like Entrecard. Blogging is not about how many points you get on Entrecard. The idea of writing meaningful content has been replaced with this click happy attitude of point collecting, showing off stats and so forth. It wasn’t like that a few years ago – this is an all new type of fever, and it’s getting worse. The truth about Entrecard, is while it may increase your traffic, the traffic you get is 90% one second visits, which is really bad for for any blog. This is why I only use it sparingly. Also, if you use Adsense or many other PPC programs and you have the ads on the front of your homepage, you will become smartpriced and render your profits worthless. It’s so much better to only have ads on individual posts, and not on your homepage. Entrecard will increase your bounce rate (the quickness by which people instantly leave to click onto the next Entrecard site..haha), which is what you don’t want. Before I installed Entrecard, the average visitor looked through 7 articles on my site and spent 10 minutes looking through them. Now, it’s down to one pageview and a two minute visit average. I am seriously thinking of removing it from my site, but with so many friends depending on it, I have fallen in to a pit of dependence and am afraid I may lose many readers if I remove it. It’s like nasal spray – once you start using it, you can’t stop because your nose will stay stuffy for a few agony filled weeks upon quitting. It’s a definite catch-22. I probably use Entrecard for 5 minutes per day and click one if I see it. I only pay a max of 128 credits for an ad and I have never turned down an ad. I see some people rejecting 35% of all attempts to purchase – what is that all about? If I see someone rejecting a larger percentage of ads, I will not even attempt to get one as I don’t want to ruin my 0.00% rejection stat…hahaha!
Ok, that’s enough negative critiquing of Entrecard. It really depends on how you as an individual use it. It really does offer more positive benefits than it does negative and I have made several new friends through it. I think like anything, it can be detrimental if you overuse it and depend on it too much. People forget you could just as easily go through the main directory of Blog Catalog visiting everyone there, leave comments, make friends and gain new readers the old fashioned way.
There’s really no way to judge whether content is good or not, at least from an algorithmic standpoint. That is really up to the masses. I also realize that I don’t control anyone but myself and the content I write, so I will not take the outside world personally. On another aspect, I have many blogging friends, all writing different content. Some write only about their family, some are just having fun, some write with stunning brilliance and some are trying to get rich – most fall somewhere in the middle. No matter what they write, I still read because they are friends!
What it boils down to, is that we are all in this thing together and amazingly, we are all getting along quite well. I am just trying to come to terms with my perception of the blogosphere. I don’t like show offs, but I may still like the person doing the showing off. I think it’s a crazy thing to call yourself a liberal or conservative, because none of us are truly one or the other. I am an independent in my political, religious and every other belief I have – chances are, so are each and everyone of you on a deeper level. Now for this weeks links:
How To Upgrade To The Latest Version of WordPress – from Garry Conn. There are lots of sites that can show you how to upgrade your self-hosted Wordpress blog, but this one is actually easy to understand. It shows you how to do it step by step via FTP, which is really the correct way to do it.
Euromillions Rollover Contest – comment here – from FiddyP. My buddy Andy Bailey’s new contest. All you have to do is leave a comment to win a great prize. As you may know, I won his last contest and quickly received my brand spanking new set of headphones. While you’re there, check out his many fantastic articles.
Drill Here. Drill Now. Pay Less – from Rolando. Go to this post for information on how you can help convince congress to drill for oil here in America. Like Rolando and many of you, I can barely afford to drive with these skyrocketing gas prices. The way you change things is by simply getting involved.
Perfectly Imperfect – By Catatonic Kid. She is truly a brilliant writer and is definitely worth reading. This post is but one of many great ones. Be sure to visit her, you see some truly introspective passion.
Incomplete Figure – By Francis Scudellari of Caught In The Stream. This is a strange and undulating poem. It’s actually one of my favorites of all the poems I’ve read on line. I love the unusual perspective. I am new to his blog, but really enjoy his writing style and his unique drawings.
The Blood River Flesh Hunter – A bizarre short story I wrote a few months back (one of my personal faves of my own work). Please read the above poem and then read my story, you will feel very unusual when you’re done…I promise!
You Know You’re a Flirt When – Written by The Sandman, one of my favorite writers on line, offers this fantastic and hilarious post. Highly recommended! This is a late addition to this batch – I’m so glad I saw it.

Hey Bobby! I’ve really been in a stupor lately. I don’t know what is wrong with me. I’ll tell you more when I see you online.
Thanks for the wake up call in the first part. You’re right about the displaying of stuff like that on the sidebar. It shouldn’t matter at all to people like me… who just want to scream and post narcissistic pictures.
Think I need to read up on what Entrecard is before I get the second part…

Hey Bobby, thanx for the link!
And I just love this post of yours. Just a few hours ago Marzie came and told me about Entrecard. I didnt know what it was about until I came here. Thank you so much for the info. Now I am definitely thinking twice about signing up at Entrecard, because from what you have described, it is not exactly what I wanna get into. Of course all of us love visits, especially from new visitors, but people just visiting me for a few seconds just for the sake of visiting will definitely give me a high bounce rate, which I definitely want to avoid.
Plus, I am a bit eccentric when it comes to my blog. I write article based posts, so I normally dont do tags and memes. I believe posts like that, no matter how many new links Ill get, will take away the niche I try to maintain on my blog. I dont think Garry Conn would ever make a post about 10 favorite colors and what they mean to my life or 5 icecream flavors that knock me off my feet post.
I even removed applications like MyBlogLog from my sidebar because after a certain point, I realized some people are just visiting without actually reading what I write only so that their profile appears on MBL. And when people realized I dont have MBL widget on my sidebar anymore, the number of visits drastically came down. I even stopped linking all my fav bloggers on my sidebar because there were just too many and it started clogging up my side bar and made it look ugly. Instead I subscribe to everyone using bloglines. All these definitely made me become more and more unpopular, but the strange thing is, deep inside I feel satisfied, because now I know people who visit my blog are those genuinely interested in what I write and those who want to share their experience/opinion regarding a particular issue that I just wrote. I want to be a serious writer, and even if I am writing a joke, I am dead serious about it. Period.
Plus, with Entrecard etc, it looks like Ill have to spend more time on the net. Blogging itself takes a lot of my time, especially visiting other blogs that I love to read (like yours), and because of that I no longer have time for social networking sites like orkut.com, myspace.com etc. I was once extremely active on these sites. Now with a job and other part-time jobs and blogging and fulfilling daily lifes commitments and obligations, I can afford to spend my free online time only for blogging. I just wish I had more time, but alas. All we have is 24 hours a day.

Thanks for the link love, Bobby =) I really like that via these batches I get introduced to people I probably wouldn’t have found all by my lonesome just because your readership is so large/varied.
Anyway, I’m totally with you on the PR thing. Good marketing isn’t about being showy. It’s about engaging folks, and self-aggrandisement rarely helps that. There’s also the classic rule in publishing that the more math you have in a text, the smaller your readership will be. It works the same way online. Most people don’t like numbers much, especially numbers they don’t really understand.

There is a lot of controversy around with the Entrecard. I stumbled across Entrecard just when I was starting with my blog – by pure chance. I am not an experienced blogger and mainly thanks to Entrecard I discovered blogging more closely. For now I think that there are more pros than cons, that’s how I feel about it.

I am guilty as charged!! But, as far as EC is concerned I have met a ton of new friends. And, I also get by here more often.
When I am not running behind I try to spend sometime at the sites and leave comments. Tonight I am running way behind because I didn’t have a signal all day. But, this post caught my eye and you are special.

Therefore, more people are visiting and being exposed to what I hope is always positive and uplifting.
So I am not really bragging. But, I did want to attract more sponsors and readers and it is working. Oh goodness I am in a quandary now.

Actually, I use entrecard the way it was meant to be used. No one second drops for me. I read the post, then comment on it. And if there is a social bookmarking link available, I Digg & Stumble it.
I do that in the hopes that others will do the same, and take the same care in reading that I did.
Most of the time I get little to no folks even coming over to drop, but that is ok. I am more interested in having an EC reputation as someone who takes the network seriously, and is not just there to make their stats go up.
Besides, blogs are not judged by stats, they are judged by content and comments. So let those who oppose sincerity have their one second visits.
Nice posts and a nice website btw…

Makes me wonder why so many bloggers seem to think advertising Google’s Pork Rations help them?
I am surprised you didn’t mention the Technorati Thong Tag used to advertise Blog Authority?
Seems to me that most people who are not Bloggers either have no idea or care about Page Rank and Technorati Authority. People using search engines are scanning sites to see if a post or site has the information they need and they most likely will never see the Pork Rations and Technorati Thong Tags.
After the hype of Blog Rush and seeing the increased Page hits equalled zero seconds of visit time, Entrecard seems to be another web scam that promises digital miracles of increased traffic not readers.

I recommended EntreCard to someone from BlogCatalog who wondered why i hadn’t been by in awhile* Basically saying U get out of it what U put into it*
I think all Bloggers Love getting Comments most + hopefully some o the EC Power Poopers will bother to do dat*
It’s become clear that there are 2 types of Blogging – 1 cuz U Enjoy it + 2 for $$$! The second seems to be just 1 Big Numbers Game + really who Cares?
EntreCard is a c0ol way to get some Exposure for yer Blog + it has totally supplanted MyBlogLog (dead as Doornail) + BlogCatalog (still very Good) + SpicyPage (barely Warm) + FuelMyBlog (Dry Pump) as a Quick + EZ way to Visit yer Fellow Bloggers + Discover New Stuff*
But even EntreCard needs to get back to some Reasonable Pricing for Ads – I am Not going to be Visiting 512 or 1024 Blogs to place 1 Ad! Even my Free Time is more Valuable than that!!

i’ve got to disagree with your comments on rappers using terrible backing tracks created oin a pc to rap over. the whole point of rap is the lyrics. in my opinion rapping is closer to poetry than song. the simpler the beats, the more emphasis there is on the lyrics.

ever heard of Thievery Corporation? they aren’t rappers but create their music digitally, some with lyrics some without. Thie two albums “The Richest Man in Babylon” and “The Mirror Conspiracy” are out of this world. I’d be interested to know if you like them…

Hi Jean, from what I can tell, you can really only back up your template. Your blog posts and comments are written to hard disk and managed by blogspot. A good password is your best protection. Also, you could open a wordpress.com account and import your entire blogspot blog into a wordpress.com blog – but you wouldn’t want it actually published, just used as a backup. If you had both published, it may hurt your blog ratings. I don’t really think all that is necessary unless you are paranoid

It depends on if it is a self-hosted wordpress blog or a free wordpress blog hosted by wordpress.com (similar to blogspot). While my blog is wordpress, I host it myself. Some sites have an address like janedoe.wordpress.com, which means it’s not self hosted. A free blog using wordpress.com as a host does not allow javascript in the sidebar, unless it is offered in the control panel. Also, they don’t allow you to run ads of any kind.

Hello Sandman, My time spent on line is like this: I spend maybe an hour per week writing articles. I spend around 5 hours per week reading and commenting on other blogs, As you can see, I spend very little time blogging at all. Like you, I want to be taken seriously, and with every extra little fad that pops up – like Entrecard – it really lowers a blogs validity and gives the perception of being a rabid “do anything for traffic” image, which I really don’t want.
I have many friends who do all this stuff and I am willing to try different ideas; however, every time I do, I become disgruntled with it within a few weeks. When I first started blogging, stuff like this didn’t bother me. I can’t explain why, but it does now…haha. Maybe I’m just insane

You are more than welcome CK! That’s an interesting point about the more math you have. Pagerank has become meaningless to the entire blogosphere because any blog can get involved in a link chain meme, and gain an undeserved pagerank of 4 or 5. I know of one blog that is nothing but lame award posts (literally…no meaningful content) and has a pagerank of 6! The best way to do things is to have all natural stats and never cheat using linkchains and shared click lists. I think of these methods as steroids for bloggers, and nobody likes an athlete on steroids. Before long, I believe Google’s algorithm will devalue all associated sites using this method.

Hi Jackie! I really don’t see other bloggers as being braggarts by displaying stats, I think I would feel like I was, if I displayed them! I have this anti-ego philosophy from my lifelong study of Zen and martial arts – it’s so deeply ingrained in my persona that I cannot change it. Sometimes, when I write posts like this, it is really about me trying to understand things and the action of people. To me, image is absolutely meaningless; therefore, I have a very difficult time understanding it. From my philosophical standpoint, if I heard someone say, “I have an image to uphold,” , I simply cannot comprehend that statement. This is so difficult for me to explain, especially if you haven’t spent 25 years studying the philosophical precepts of Zen or Taoism. Perhaps I will write a post about it. Thanks Jackie

Hi Jackie, when I first started using entrecard, I sold tons of ads. But since I spend little time using it, the buying as dwindled. Pagerank has more to do with scoring on a particular keyword, but blogspot doesn’t offer any control of using keywords. Say some one is searching in Google for “how to use keywords” , a blogspot blog would literally have to be named “howtousekeywords.blogspot.com” to gain any use of a high pagerank.
Like I said in my post, I am trying to understand certain aspects of my thought processes, and by writing and getting feedback, I am getting there. You have a fine blog and are extremely upliting, so you are doing quite well! All this is really about me

Thanks Guy, you have the right approach in using entrecard. I will point out that great content doesn’t constitute a great blog. Many blogs that generate a lot of money have terrible content but are really smart and designed to score on a particular keyword, thus generating a specific kind of traffic (you probably already knew that). It’s much like music: the best music is definitely not in the top selling area because it’s not about quality, but instead are specifically designed marketing campaigns to capture the “what’s hot” market. To me, content is what makes a blog great, which is why I don’t read the more popular ones
#34 by Revellian at June 15th, 2008

Hi Debbie, I’ve gained some new readers from entrecard and many are repeat readers, but those are mostly people I already knew before joining E.C. I think that technorati authority is the least important of all ranks. Unless someone actually uses technorati to browse the web, the authority is meaningless. I am proud to have a low authority now that i no longer pump it up with memes and link trains. Entrecard is better than blogrush and is semi fun to use, but can become overused by any blogger. So are you gonna get entrecard? hahaha

Hey Billy!
One thing I noticed about your blog that you should really change is how many posts are being shown on your main page. I don’t know how many you have but less is much better. For seo purposes, it’s best to have 5 or 6. In your case, 10 would be more than plenty. It would make things much easier to read. I always have a difficult time scrolling.
Well, entrecard is alright but I think it’s actually been somewhat detrimental to my blog. I will still use it but not too much. I think the new pricing system sucks – they really need to change it.

I didn’t sat rappers have no talent. What I said is that the backing tracks for most rap songs require very little skill to create. You don’t have to be a real musician to create tracks like that. I’m a musician, so to me, it is the music that counts, not the vocals. I mostly listen to instrumental music without vocals.
