I’ve tried out and am a member of so many social networking sites it has become preposterous. I really don’t like any of them that much, but Twitter, Facebook and Stumbleupon seem to be the only ones having any relevance. I’ve always thought that blogging and commenting are the best way to social network, and the others are simply supplements.
It’s basically a waste of time, but can bring you some extra readers and is fun sometimes. One thing that helped me use it more and made it convienient is the Firefox extension Twitterfox. It places a little icon in your address bar and gives you instant updates allowing you to respond quickly. I’ve tried a few desktop apps but they weren’t in my browser, so I never used them. See below that Speedy sent me a message and I instantly replied, making Twitter work more like a public instant messenger which is really what it is:
Note the tabs on twitterfox for Recent, Replies and Messages. To the left of the “Recent” tab is a convenient link button to post your blog articles instantly (or whatever page you’re currently browsing).
I also use Qwitter, which sends you an e-mail when someone un-follows you. I’ve already had one person un-follow me and I’ve un-followed several people. One political twit kept saying idiotic racial things like, “Kill Obama, he’s a terrorist” and other sick things too disgusting to mention. I actually reported him to Twitter management and hope his account is deleted.
I spend more time actually blogging and commenting than I do with any of these extras.
Follow me on Twitter: Twitter – Revellian I’ll return the favor!
I use the Twitter and Stumbleupon applications on Facebook which tie them all together. I tweet with Twitterfox through my browser and it appears on my Facebook profile. I’m pretty lazy with social networking so I don’t spend much time messing with any of it.
Stumbleupon
Stumbleupon is my favorite bookmarker and is great for traffic. I think the rest are a waste of time. I never use Digg because it’s so over-gamed (or I just don’t know how to use it effectively). Just as a redundant refresher for those who don’t use Stumbleupon correctly:
When you are the first person to stumble an article (the one who discovers it) you should give it a thumbs up and a review. If you don’t write a review, the algorithm gets no traction and virtually kills most of the traffic. I write a review and tag every stumble I do – it’s the best policy. Also, make sure you install the Stumbleupon tool bar. Here’s my Stumbleupon profile.
Technorati
Just a quick note: Technorati is completely irrelevant. If you’re not using Technorati as a blog search engine, it’s a waste of time to even worry about it. I once got caught up in all that viral link building crap, but it has actually hurt my page rank. I recommend against link trains as they will hurt, not help you. Of course, toolbar pagerank is also irrelevant. I still have over 40 pages on page one search engine results with a PR2. Basically, all statistics are impertinent. Writing something worth reading will always be the best plan of action!

I like that Firefox toolbar thing for twitter and may start using that rather than the way I’ve been doing it. Thanks for the info. I don’t really like facebook much at all. I guess I just think it is too much of a time-waster with too many silly (can you believe that is ME calling something else silly) things going on in there. LOL. Anyway, I’m off to add you to the list of people I follow on twitter.

Hi Teeni! Well, all of it’s quite silly, but why not play with it a little bit. I like that little link button to the left of the ‘recent’ tab, making it easy to promote an article you like.
Facebook is good for knowing when all your friend’s birthdays are…haha! I use it for that but don’t get too caught up in all these networks
You should get a quick Gravatar profile so you won’t be displayed as a frown faced purple monster in my comments…lol!

Twitter??
I was first enthralled with it because it allows me to do mini posts from my phone. I found that it is also a great way of keeping up with bloggers I know. My contact list is way to large to have feed updates on everyone. My mailbox would explode.
Technorati is a mad house. Most blogs are not checked because they do not send out pings … and viral linking? Links from most of the “members” are page rank 0. You get no real advantage or gain.
Page rank is only accomplished by getting links from higher page rank blogs. If you were to get just one link from a page rank 10, it would be much more powerful than 10,000 from page rank 1. Moral of the story? Rank is only important if you want lots of hits from keywords. Comments and blog popularity come from content and comments the author makes on OTHER blogs. I had Technorati fever once myself. Now, I don’t really care.
I have yet to utilize Stumble Upon, or Facebook. I cannot keep up with what I do now. (I’m still not sure what that really is)
To sum up? Blogging is fun when you follow your own path. Trying to become a power-blogger is hard work, and futile. (Borg Bloggers from Bloguania)

Hi Speedy! Stumbleupon doesn’t lend itself to going crazy like with some of the other sites. I only stumble truly great articles and don’t repeatedly stumble articles on my friends sites because it’s against the rules. One stumble can bring an article 100-800 or so visitors, so it’s really powerful. In my book, you are a power-blogger Speedy!
If you have a ton of stumble fans and reviews of your stumbleupon profile and you use it frequently, the power of your stumble rises. If I stumble a post, it will bring several hundred visitors that day IF I’m the first person to stumble it.
I really don’t care about any of this stuff; this is just a “filler” post to get my mind off the election hahahaha!!!

I must be living in the stone age of digital Blogging since I have no time to learn how to Twit or Twat to be a Speedy Twitties (a euphemism for boobs???).
When did Twat, a euphemism for vagina, become a instant messaging (massaging?) term???
Seems like all these additional Social networks are reducing meaningful comment conversations on Blogs.
Stumbleupon is something that always stumbles me ~ sometimes Stumbleupon bookmarking works in Firefox and sometimes it don’t.
To stumble your latest political posts, I need to create a link:
http%3A%2F%2Fwww.stumbleupon.com/submit?url=your post link & title
for Stumbling Success!
Amen to chasing the irrelevant Black holes of Technorati!
My free time is better spent writing and reading something worth reading followed by writing and reading memorable comment conversations!

Hi Debbie! I spend a total of 5 minutes per week on social networking; however, that 5 minutes sends me 500-1000 extra readers per week. Posting my articles on Twitter has proven to be worthwhile and only takes 1 click and 1 sentence. Stumbleupon should always be done with the SU toolbar. It works 100% of the time for me! Overall, it’s silly and that’s why I have it all automated so it requires no effort as I am lazy!!!

I’m not sure this was the quite the post I expected to see here but it was quite a helpful one! Over the last day or so I’ve been doing some Twittering of my own and this is just ANOTHER reminder that I need to start putting “The Blogging Trinity” together to start giving a good boost to my blog. Hopefully I’ll find the time to do it. (#):)

I rarely use twitter- I think it’s stupid. I am not on Facebook, I was on there once and all I saw was profiles of college kids drinking and showing off there belly piercings. I am not allowed to show my piercings so no Facebook for me. I thought the original point was for professional reasons???
I like Stumble Upon a lot and I have received a lot of traffic from it. I think quite a few people return from there too, because over the course of using it this summer- my traffic has really increased.
I am not really much into social media- I have five kids to socialize with why do I care who’s tweeting about what they ate for breakfast?
#23 by Revellian at October 21st, 2008

Hi Michelle! I agree it’s stupid! The only thing I don’t like is that people often stumble the articles I think suck, and my best articles are ignored…haha! SU has been seriously cracking down on people who ask for stumbles and if caught, they will delete your account. I know three people who lost their accounts this past week, so I don’t ask anymore.
I basically don’t really use them, I automate them

I agree with everything you say about Technorati. It’s a nightmare – either not working properly or when it is, it uses its crazy ‘rules’ to almost discourage people from trying to get a higher authority. The 3 month rule has hit me hard after I took part in the ‘Big Bang’ link train – now even when I get new links, my authority just drops and drops. Have stopped checking it, it’s so disheartening!
As long as I have loyal readers who like what I write and take time to comment on my blog, I’m happy.
As for Twitter – I would be very dull at the moment..

Great post. I was wondering about Technorati. Guess I can stop wasting my time.
I am trying out twitter. For some reason I’m just not interested in Facebook.
I use stumbleupon. It does bring me some traffic. But never the tidal wave of traffic that people talk about. It makes me wonder if maybe that tidal wave occurs in a kiddie pool??

I’m right there with ya Bobby – quickly realising that FB, SU and Tw are the shining light.
To make SU work for you, you need to be regularly reviewing – that’s the only trick. But I’ve noticed people on there tend to be a little less ‘friendly’ in terms of, they won’t just add friends for the hell of it. They want to somehow ‘know’ you first. Not everyone, but enough of them!
FB is my long standing friend.
My only issue is that I blog anonymously and there’s people in my social networking space (FB & Tw) that I really don’t want knowing about my blog – simply because its personal. So I don’t take full advantage of the triple threat.
For future ones I might tho!

@Potato Chef: You should at least list your blog on Technorati, but not spend much time worrying over it. If the right person stumbles your article, it can bring a ton of traffic that day, but getting stumbles from people is a matter of luck. Enjoy my horror story!
@Svasti: I use SU more than any other but not constantly. If you become a fan of other members and review their profile in addition, you will gain fans yourself. Having friends is less important than fans – it can be a little tricky toget the most out of it. So you’re anonymous? Me too! I’m actually a 9 year old boy who stole this guy Bobby’s identity…lol!!!

I agree with most of your top picks for social networking. And I wholeheartedly agree with you about Technorati. I’ve found few who feel the same way though (or at least they won’t admit it). I never got the whole Technorati thing. I’m glad I didn’t waste much time there (…and my blogs still get tons of traffic).
