I was thinking about how truly thankful I am to have the Internet and be a blogger today. We often get caught up in our lives as well as in blogging itself. We get burned out and we often forget just how great it is to have this incredible medium. Last year, I wrote a lot about this very subject and am purposefully reminding myself how great life is, even if it’s not going well – or even better, how great it is to be alive.
I am a science and nature lover and have always been fascinated with the very idea and how spectacular it is to simply be alive. I often write about depression and what I’ve gone through. Every article I write about that subject, it is my hope that someone out there will benefit from it and I can get to know them. Today, I’m taking a new path and not talking about depression. Instead, I’m talking about appreciation and thankfulness of how great it is to be alive right this very moment…alive.
Aside from all the corruption, hatred, wars, racism, egotism, misery, pain, death, loss, heartlessness, greed, crooked politicians, doom and gloom, the end of the world and all that negative bullshit that we all experience – there is one fantastic reason to be thankful and beaming with joy: you are alive and breathing. This is absolutely true, otherwise you wouldn’t be reading this. Dead people cannot read. Beneath the endless layers of existence, the beauty of being alive is one idea we can agree upon.
The very idea that we somehow live on this glorious blue sphere floating on the fabric of space/time somewhere in a vastly expanding universe is stupendous, majestic, beautiful and incredible. There really are no words good enough to describe how phenomenal it is to be alive.
We worry about how we look, what kind of car we have, how much money we make, what school we go to, what food we like, if we are ugly or pretty, fat or thin and a multitudinous array of meaningless nonsense – all those things that truly don’t matter. We often fill our lives with these superficial ideals all the while we should be freaking amazed to be here. I could be starving to death in a barren desert, dying of thirst and I will still be thankful to be alive for as long as I am alive.
I have only one blogging tip: Get to know your readers and become their friends. I mean really get to know them. It can be cumbersome as you have more and more, but there are some fantastic people out there. Really, the only reason I have this blog is to have worldwide friends. It’s impossible to be close to everyone, but I try my best to get to know them. Sometimes I feel guilty that I don’t have enough time to spend here, but I am appreciative of every person I meet.
I do not see the world through rose colored glasses, but I do choose to be extremely vibrant about life and what it truly means to be here. We can ponder the deepest of philosophies, but no meaning is greater than knowing how great it is to be alive. Have you thought about that lately? In the simplest way possible, I just had to share this fantastic feeling I have with all of you. If we all thought about life in this way, the world would be a better place.
*The Earth pic is one of my favorites, but I have no idea were it originated from. It’s been in my files for 10 years. Those clouds and shadows are spectacular.

i usually don’t feel to happy to be alive… but out me in the middle of a panic attack that i am sure is “the big one elizabeth!!!!” and i am ready to do what it takes to save my own life…… go figure….

Hi Jodi! I’ve never had a panic attack, but I know many people who do. Though we have a natural instinct to survive, our most primordial desire – as humans we also understand the idea of being alive in a philosophical sense. I’m not necessarily thinking about happiness, but to truly know how great it is to be here and love life itself.

Life is everything, next to that is good health. I too love Scifi, and sometimes wonder all the things possible in the future that are out of reach today.
However, when I think about history, and how frugal people lived in the past, and the countless wars, diseases, and lower life expectancy, I truly am thankful!

Thanks Euro! Though I do not agree with the actions of my government and others and wish things were different, I have nothing to complain about. My life is going well, I have plenty of food and shelter. I’m not rich, but I have it made compared to many people in this world and am truly thankful for that. I think people from every country are more alike than different.

Great and refreshing post Bobby. It is never enough to remind about something like this. Reading this post was for me like taking some high quality energy drink that makes you feel good.
Cheers!

Thanks J.C.! I really needed to write this. I sometimes write too much horror and dark prose, so this is to balance the vibe and set the tone for the upcoming weeks. Cheers to you!

You have this capability to often open my eyes to things I hadn’t thought of before. I know I need to improve upon my thought processes before things will improve for me, so it’s something I am definitely giving much consideration to lately. Just not to the point of exuberance that you have reached!

Thanks Miragi! I think a better way to say it is that we all have the capability to open our own eyes. If anything I ever write helps someone do that, I have succeeded in my purpose. I’m not necessarily hopping up and down in joy, but am calm and quietly peaceful. I want inner peace to exude itself naturally – or that if in fact I am truly appreciative for being alive in my heart, soul and mind – it becomes a seed from which true inner joy and can flourish!

This was an BRILLIANT post. I have gotten to know my readers and I have become very close with many of them, and I feel truly blessed to be a part of such a wonderful blog community.
I do need to learn how to take the time to be more appreciative of the thing I have instead of feeling sad over the negative things in my life. Thank you for reminding me.

Thank you so much Meleah! All I know is that in bad times, my blogging friends have lifted me up. That alone is beyond words. I only wish I had enough free time to visit everyone I know everyday! Over time, I seem to know so many people here, it can be a bit overwhelming.
Have a wonderful weekend!

I was just talking with someone today about the importance of focusing each day on what you’re grateful for instead of what you’re missing or upset by. And your posts, especially this one, capture that so well. Your exuberant spirit and energy lift everything you write into a world full of hope and promise. As it happens, I’ve offered you a little recognition on my blog today for just that quality. I don’t know if you’re into awards – but there’s one for you. All the best – John

Thank you John! Every now and then, I envy those who never even think about these things – but I know how lucky I am to be here and to be me – and let go of that envy.
I’m coming right over!

Before I can answer your probing question, my mind needs to explore the illusion of physical reality versus Revellian reality since I’m never certain whether I’m fully alive or walking down the streets of Bobby Seymour’s Dead Zone…
How do you know Dead People cannot read? How do you think I’m able to read your horror stories? LOL!
@ “We worry about how we look…” : You do? Wait till you reach my age when worry turns to wonder – like, I wonder why I am alive today?
And, our vibrant lives need great friends like you!

Hi Bobby, interesting topic – and great pic. I’m into having the attitude of gratitude, and that is the first thing I thank the universe for every am, the ability to keep on breathing in and out for one more day. If others need further inspiration I wrote about Nick Vujicic, if you’ve not heard of him, tune in and check him out, he’s a luv. So are you, Bobby, FYI : )
Ciao, Zen Lill

@Debbie: With the many stupid things I’ve done in my life, I am astonished to be alive. Most of my friends are either dead or in prison, so I am elated to be alive. Maybe dead people can read. Unfortunately, their visits don’t count towards my blog hits…LOL!
@Zen Lill: Thanks! Yes, I know who Nick is, and I will come read your post! You thank the universe? Some people do that, some thank God, but I thank the moon and the wolves – I was raised by a lovely pack…LOL!

Hugs for you Bobby….I love this today!!

sometimes I think life doesn’t treat me fairly ( especially when I fall while I’ve done my best.) but then I realize this isn’t a wise thing to do. I am thankful to be alive; to be given some chances to breathe and to know people ( to know you too), to learn, to witness the beauty of nature etc. But I would say- being alive takes a lot of responsibilities; to God, to friends and family, to my surroundings.
Great post Bobby

I AM thankful to be alive each and every day that I wake up. Of course, I am in no pain and I truly appreciate that.
Bobby – you are adopting a wonderful attitude and I think it will help battle depression. I admit I never had a definite purpose for my blog when I started blogging other than to pass time while I recuperated, but I am seeing some wonderful benefits in the people I’m meeting and have met. Yes, there are negatives too, but the good outweighs the bad. And I hope you count me as a friend always.

Bobby, your post has really got me thinking. i can confidently tell you this “Yes, I am thankful that I am alive”.
You know, our state is experiencing series of landslides lately. Just the other day, a landslide has taken 4 lives and 14 bangalows, not to mention damaged cars & roads. It’s heartaching to read the news.

@Marzie: Thanks! We should all appreciate being alive!
@Jackie: Thanks Jackie! Every breath is a gift. I live in the moment because I, and nobody else ever knows when their last moment will be. Today I live, and today I live the best I can!
@Lulu: Thank you! Well, life doesn’t treat most people fairly. If we fail, even after great effort, it should be taken positively. To fail only means you are growing!
@Teeni: Thank you! Yes, I have improved my positivity and that is quite a feat for me. You can always count on me as a friend too! I’ll come check out the tag:)
@Becca: Thanks! Yes, we need to remind ourselves every day, not just on really good or really bad days. May this day be great for you!
@Jean: Really? Landslides are really dangerous. Stay safe Jean! I say live every day like it’s your last, and have no regrets. Have a safe and wonderful day! I’ll come see your tag too:)

It must be spreading… I have been offline a few days to move some bedrooms around so the kids could have more space and even though I have been offline I too have been feeling incredibly grateful in the last few days.
I read somewhere recently online that happiness is contagious for up to three degrees in social circles. This is online as well- people with happy facebook pictures have happy contacts (or so they say). I don’t have a facebook account so I don’t know if this is the case. I am really grateful and that is very close to happy for me. I am not a rose colored glasses person either- but I like to walk on the optimistic side.
Great post- and now if you have Elvis’ old Reach I’ll give you $50 for it, and you can massage my gums too!

Thanks Michelle! I’ll tell you, on Facebook, I get so many incoming messages and thousands of “requests” to participate in endless little things like happiness contracts and so forth. I ignore most of it because there aren’t enough hours in a day to do them all. I barely ever look at it. I do have Priscilla Presley’s used dental floss – will that be of use to you?

I often say it almost jokingly, but every day both feet hit the floor is a good day.
I’ve had my “brushes” and in reflecting on them I am very happy to still be here. Beyond all the problems and troubles aroung us, simply being here, being alive, is truly a wonderful thing.
Each and everything we do affects someone, even if it’s only ourselves. If everyone took just a moment to try and make that “affect” a positive one the world would truly be a better and happier place.

I’ve had my brushes too Dave, and nowadays, I rarely do anything to place myself in danger like I did as a teen. Looking back, I did some really idiotic things LOL!
I’m done beating myself up over the world’s problems. I’ll live off the land if I need to and I just can’t get all worked up like I did over the initial bailouts. I know you got mad too. I stayed mad for months…hahaha.
Have a peaceful day

I often blog about developing friendships through blogging then do not find the time to develop them myself. I read all of your posts by email (one of the few blogs I do get delivered to me this way) yet do not come along and comment.
I wanted to say that I appreciate you for the insights you share with us and I agree we have to learn to appreciate life whatever it deals us.

@Jean: Just remember, it’s ok to get mad – just don’t stay mad and let go of any/all bad feelings. It has taken my whole life to learn it’s alright to let go of pain.
@Sue: Thank you so much! I understand. We all have our lives, and becoming really close to bloggers is really cumbersome. I do have a handful of close blogging friends, and that’s good enough for me. You are such a sweet person Sue
