Hi Bobby! Just dropping by for a read, and what can I say, this is a brilliant piece in so many ways - it is nice to see a writer with an awareness of literary theory and good work tackling this in a short story. Great control of dialogue and psychological development, and funny ending, too!

Big fan, let me know when your novel comes out.

Regards,
Valerie.

And a blizzard of thanks to you Jodi! Theory itself serves as great matter for characters to discuss in this way. Reading about it in text books is dry and boring and when applied in most cases, creates dry writing.

Yes, please call me Bobby. Agreed. If a stock plot is used, such as many TV shows use like Law & Order, CSI and so forth, the overall drama and interesting dialog can make the plot seamless. Interesting characters talking about and doing interesting things make interesting writing. That's my goal. At this point in history, there is no such thing as an original plot. It's all been attempted by someone already. I suppose beneath every story, there is a stock plot in there somewhere - I just don't want to notice it. Thanks so much for commenting Melissa, I simply love talking about this stuff!

@Revellian (or should I call you Bobby?), I am a little torn on whether a stock plot is worthless. In many cases, it is the characters that make a story rich and compelling rather than the plot (this is why a plot isn't even necessary). So, if you take a stock plot and plug in some truly amazing characters, it's probably worthwhile. On the other hand, there are those books and movies that make me think, "Oh this story again..." That's no fun.

A truckload of thanks for you Melissa! My question about formulaic structure has always been, "If it's a stock plot, wouldn't it be worthless even if good?" What is a plot anyway? Can a story be great without a plot or said plot is angular or illusive? I say yes!

Okay, there's some weird shit going on in the blogosphere lately. All these new blogs I'm finding have murder, blood, and gore. Big time. This is just sick and intense and absolutely excellent. You kept me on the edge of my seat and now I have to go sit and think about formulaic writing for a little while.
