I normally never write about entertainment or movie stars, but I am compelled to mention actor Christian Bale’s explosive tirade against the director of photography during filming of his new flick Terminator Salvation. Bale has been one of my favorite actors since his riveting performance as the psychotic yuppie Patrick Bateman in American Psycho--a film based on the book by one of my idols, Bret Easton Ellis.
As my readers know, I write transgressional fiction (related to horror but usually deals with characters with severe personality disorders, freaks, bizarre murderers, drug addicts and so forth and is known to go where horror doesn’t) and Bale has played in a few of my favorite transgressional films: American Psycho and his brutally bizarre performance in The Machinist. Batman isn’t my cup of tea, but I did like like both of Nolan’s films. Other great transgressional films include the brilliant Fight Club and the masterpiece Pulp Fiction.
Anyway, he exploded on his DP while working on the set. Bale is extremely serious and was amidst an arduous scene when the inexperienced DP Shane Hurlbut was messing with the lights, distracting him and ruining it. He dropped dozens of incendiary F-bombs, degraded the guy, told him he wanted to beat the hell out of him and so forth. I know many people are probably offended by his actions but I am loving it!
With several videos of his psycho-conniption fit floating around, this one is the most awesome. Revolucian (he’s on myspace here) arranged his profane phraseology into a searing club/trance mix. Revolucian is the man! I fell out of my computer chair gasping for breath in hysterical laughter. All voices are from the actual incident, complete with the DP saying, “I was looking at the light,” and Bale hammering him. It is packed with F-bombs but you must watch it. It is priceless: (if you can’t see the video displayed below go here)
What do you think? Will it keep you from seeing his new films? Bale, who is known to despise the press, likes to stay low key, doesn’t care about fame or star status and doesn’t mix with the Hollywood inside crowd is probably hating life about now. Nonetheless, he’s still a brilliant actor and an occasional eruption of anger just means he’s human. If I were a movie star I’d probably be in prison for unleashing a hell storm of machine gun fire on the paparazzi, leaving a trail of blood splattered bodies across Hollywood Boulevard. I get uneasy in large crowds hahaha! I must go watch American Psycho again for the thousandth time.
I wouldn’t say he believes he such a star that he can treat people like crap, he’s more like Chef Ramsay--just wanting the work to be great; nonetheless, it is inexcusable. Society loves this stuff; Britney’s breakdown, Chef Ramsay degrading his underlings and Simon Cowell being heartlessly cruel to some poor teenager trying to make it as a singer.
If you bring it on yourself, it’s your fault and the public has the right to pass judgment and laugh at you.

LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO…
I recently watched footage of Lily Tomlin dropping F bombs on set, telling the director of her film to go eff himself, calling him a mo-fo (lmao, it’s really unbelievable, but it’s probably on YouTube) and telling co-star Dustin Hoffman to ’shut the eff up’ for Dustin to get really mad….so this seems to be typical of some actors. They let it go to their heads, when really, they’re some of the most fortunate people in the world. I mean…sheez ,where else can a person work for three months, and earn so much money that they don’t have to work for the rest of their lives?
But do they appreciate it? Nope.
I saw this on the news (on mute, at the gym), it’s the first time I’ve heard the F remix (?) now. It’s hilarious. If these people were working in an average workplace, they’d be given a first warning…especially the violent threats, ‘effing kick your effing ass.’ Charming!
And the thing is, what do they do? It’s not like they save lives or anything.
I’ll probably see his films and it won’t change the fact that he’s talented. If I was the director, I’d bitchslap the actor. But, prior to that, I’d make sure that there was a clause in the actor’s contract; if they misbehaved like that, they’re out. No butts. And that is what director’s ought to do.
This story reminds me of the time when they were filming the remake of The Island of Dr Moreau in Queensland. The first director was sacked because he didn’t get on with the ‘actor’. Many thought it was Marlon Brando being a prima donna, but the second director, after completing the film, came out and said that Val Kilmer was a pain in the ass/primadonna and that Brando was easy going (that he expected Brando to be difficult).
All I know, irrespective of whether they sell films or not, actors who are assholes gradually disappear from the A-list.

Hi Ana! Isn’t it a riot?!!! Yeah, you’ve got to be careful of what you say anywhere at anytime, especially if you’re famous–it might end up some tech musician’s claim to fame. Bale has stated he hates being a star and is only about the work. Batman thrust him in the big time and he isn’t liking all the attention. I predict he snaps and kills someone soon.
Val Kilmer was tweaked on meth in those days and was prone to speed fits. Kilmer, Tom Sizemore and Jeff Goldblum were known to stay awake for 50 days on that crap–it’s a wonder they’re not all dead

Yeah, that is a pretty funny remix. Honestly, I don’t think its too big of a deal. I don’t really know the full story or the events leading up to it, so it is possible that the problems run much deeper than a single mistake.
Was it unprofessional, rude, and in poor taste? Sure, but I don’t know anyone who hasn’t lost their temper at some point or another. Doesn’t make it right, but he is after all human.

People that behave like that are like spoiled children. They are NOT professionals.
Someone on a forum suggested imagining the reverse happened. What if the DP had went on ranting and raving like a madman if Bale had flubbed a line?
Why do we tolerate insanity from “stars” and not from other people? Maybe if more “stars” were treated like everybody else, they would act more like professionals and less like spoiled children.

Hi Bobby Bond 0069!
Bale sounds like he could be the lead singer for a new group called The F-bombs!
Speaking of Pulp Fiction, I’m not sure whether I like the movie or not… it was so boring to me that I fell asleep! On the other hand, “The Whole Ten Yards” is closer to the type of Movies I enjoy!

@Dover: It could ruin is A-list status, which could be what he wants. He hates the limelight.
@J.C.: I love that movie. I can overlook his insanity as I like his work so much.
@Dan: According to the director, Bale doesn’t flub lines and spends eighteen hours getting into role, building extreme intensity–and an inexperienced DP made a mistake. On the eighteenth take-because of other people’s flubs–the young guy tweaked a light. Bale said being a star is like having acid poured on his skin…he hates it. Yeah, it was immature and he has anger issues. I still don’t care, the video was hilarious.
@Debbie: Yeah, some people don’t like Pulp Fiction. It’s film noir where conversation defines action/story. Fiction writers & film makers love the film the most. I liked The Whole Ten Yards too
@Nina: And that’s how society works doesn’t it? People are judged and remembered for one bad day. I doubt he’s a jerk like that every day. Look at Mariah Carey. a woman who changes outfits at home alone 300 times per day…every day just to look at herself–and stormed out of Obama’s presidential dinner because she wasn’t invited to sit at his table. She thinks she is a deity LOL!

The video is amusing, but perhaps a minute too long :p
If it means anything, here’s an explanation about what was behind the outburst:

It doesn’t excuse the behaviour, but certainly puts it in a more understandable context.

Hi Willow! Well, we live in a society defined by 10 second sound samples, lock pot smokers in prison, base our entire culture on mythology, blame one half-witted man (George W. Bush) for the whole of the world’s problems and believe Obama is our savior. People often fail to realize it’s what you never hear that counts most–not what you do hear.

I love Bale- he’s a great actor with sexy voice, hehe. Apart from what he does as an actor, he is just a human being with characters, real characters I mean. He can get depressed even he knows people adore him and are willing to stand in line for days just to have a cup of tea with him or just to see his smile.

@Jane: We are forced to watch TV four hours per day by law here haha! I loved Fight Club, such a killer film. It’s nearly impossible to offend me, so this video is awesome in my book!
@Lulu: So…you’d stand in line for days to have a cup of tea with him? LOL! Well, you are a female. I’d shout curse words at him and thank him for the psycho-conniption fit haha

Bobby,
I really like Bale too–and American Psycho is a movie I really appreciated (it’s close to but not one of my absolute favorites). I did think it was brilliant and that he was brilliant in it.
I will still go see Bale’s movies–I guess I have fucked up so much in my own life that I tend to not be too judgmental of others, particularly when I don’t know the exact context. What’s going on in his personal life? What other factors might have led to the explosion?
I know that *everyone* right now is so stressed–it seems like the entire world is on edge. This was an unfortunate event, to be sure–but anyone can make mistakes–and to blow someone off because they lose their temper (even badly) is not something I am comfortable doing.
Good piece, as usual, my friend–
Melinda

@Jennifer: Your mother? Haha…very interesting. It’s really just silly and probably funnier to me because I’m a fan of his. Don’t play it loud!
@Melinda: Same here Melinda…I rarely hold contempt for people no matter what they’ve done–and this is just one bad day in a man’s life. Too bad society only remembers the bad. Look at George Bush. Sure he was a terrible president, but people blame him for every problem known. It’s a societal “scapegoat illusion” to point fingers–all the while it is usually their own fault. All great artists are a bit enigmatic aren’t they

Batman isn’t your cup of tea? My god. I think Batman Begins is the greatest superhero movie of all time. In fact, I didn’t like Christian Bale until he played Batman.
Pulp Fiction and Fight Club are also two of my favorite films.
Bale comes off as an asshole, but I still think he’s a great actor and if his movies look good, this little tirade won’t stop me from watching them. He doesn’t seem like someone I’d want to know personally though (those kind of tantrums rub me the wrong way).
#27 by Revellian at February 10th, 2009

Hi Melissa! I liked Batman (I agree the best superhero movies ever made) but I’m just not into superhero movies. I tend to prefer movies based on reality–and all insanity to remain confined within reality and expanding creativity inwardly. For instance, a favorite horror movie of mine is Hostel–low budget but realistic. If a horror movie has monsters, people with magic powers, ghosts and so forth–I tend to not like them–not realistic enough for me. Scary is a person not a ghost or demon to me.
Among friends and fans of the American Psycho novel along with being hardcore Bale fans–we loved the film American Psycho–one of the first true post modern transgressional films. When we heard Bale was playing Batman, we thought he sold out, but the movie wasn’t campy like the original Batman movies. To me, American Psycho will always be his greatest role–and The Machinist his 2nd. His new films are more big budget, but I sill like them.
I can’t hold it against him and hopefully he learned something valuable. He probably takes acting too seriously. Imagine the scolding Bach would’ve dished out had someone disturbed him after eighteen grueling hours of composing his greatest symphony. Still, it’s no excuse and he was an asshole–at least on that particular day
