The Ethics of Doing the Right Thing

Christy, from Christy’s Coffee Break is having a contest about Random Acts of Kindness. This is not something I did recently, it was several years ago. However, this incident is true and merits being told. It’s a day I’ll never forget and it changed me as a person. So, this isn’t an official entry. I simply dedicate this post to her and all the great people who are participating…a gift from me to all of you!

Working in many different types of sales jobs, I have learned first hand what money does and means to people. We all need money to live, unless of course we choose to live in the wilderness. I wanted to share an incident that happened to me that we can all relate to. It is my hope that we learn something from this! Lets get right into the subject at hand.

One of the highest paying jobs I had was being the manager of an AAMCO transmissions shop. For those of you not from America, AAMCO is a national chain of automotive transmission repair shops.

I know nothing about transmissions and at the time, knew nothing about sales; this is why they hired me, I was a blank slate – the unshaped clay from which they could carve a cut throat salesman. All stores in the chain pay the manager the same way, twice a week.

I was paid $500.00 every Friday (base salary) and then paid my commission check every Monday, which was usually around $1500.00 – great pay for such an easy job. I raised the store’s weekly gross from $7,500.00 per week to over $28,000.00 per week in the first two months. This wasn’t enough for the two owners, they wanted more.

I received several death threats from irate customers but the owners said it was normal and I needed to toughen up! It took me a little while to realize what was really going on; they were ripping people off.

Doing The Right Thing

A woman came in with seven children, I knew she was stressed and could sense that she had serious financial problems. She told me that her husband had left her and she was working two full time jobs to take care of her children.

It just so happened that this was the 1st time my boss let me run the shop completely by myself. Her vehicle had been towed to the shop and I made it a priority to get this woman’s vehicle repaired quickly. The head mechanic told me that she had a broken clutch cable! I was really happy that I could go relieve her stress telling her the good news.

A transmission repair is expensive, between $1200.00 – 3000.00 on average. To repair a broken clutch cable is less than $100.00 – big difference! I had a big smile ready to tell her the good news, when the owner stopped me and took me in his office.

He asked me if I had told her the diagnosis, I told him no. He looked at me and said, “Bobby, you go tell that woman that she has an internal transmission problem and we need to open it up to find out what’s wrong with it.”

I said, “I cannot do that…it’s a broken clutch cable, there’s nothing wrong with her transmission. That woman is working two full time jobs and is taking care of seven kids!”

He became irritated with me, “Everybody has seven kids and two jobs, she’s playing you like a violin. That woman has money…NOW GO GET THAT MONEY!!!!!”

I walked back into my office and the children were complaining they were hungry, some of them were crying. The woman was crying, her hands were trembling as she expected bad news…I could sense that she was used to getting bad news.

I smiled and said, “GOOD NEWS! It’s a broken clutch cable…$79.00! It’ll be ready in an hour.”

She ran behind my desk and hugged me, tears streaming down her face. I felt so good that I had been honest with her…I actually cried too. The head mechanic smiled at me. He never liked me before that day. He walked over and said, “Thank God we have someone here with the guts to do the right thing.” and shook my hand. I knew I had won the guys in the shop over as I had earned their respect.

The owner called me into his office, I could feel his fury before I opened the door. He said, “You are fired. I thought you would be great manager, but you are weak and we need a winner in here.”

I was glad he fired me. I did the right thing and am proud of myself for doing it.

How They Rip You Off

AAMCO transmissions (and most all automotive repair shops) charge what is known as shop labor on every repair. This is not based on the actual work done. It’s based on a chart in the AAMCO sales book. We charged 11 hours of shop labor at $49.00 per hour just to remove the transmission and determine the problem. This is separate from the cost and mark up of all parts!

One mechanic could remove a transmission from a Toyota Camry in 15 minutes! In many cases, the entire process of removal, disassembly and diagnosis could be done in two hours. We still charged the customer for 11 hours!!!!!

This is what greed can do to people and businesses. There is no automotive repair shop in America that will charge you for the actual work done, they will always overcharge you. This is yet another reason I see money in a responsible way. People count, not money.

How To Provide Traffic For Others

I see so many people trying hard to earn traffic for their own blogs, it’s natural. As humans, we like attention. We want to feel important and our work has some sort of validation. Often, with this mindset, we miss out on what is truly important.

“It is like a finger pointing away to the moon. Do not concentrate on the finger or you will miss all that heavenly glory…”

Bruce Lee

I suppose I sometimes see things from an opposite point of view compared to many people. That’s why I never really fit in while growing up, and in school. Whenever I saw the majority herd like sheep around the latest fad or coolest clique – I ran the opposite direction.

When we write about how to gain traffic, we are really out to gain traffic for ourselves. We rationalize, believing we are teaching others how to gain traffic – we are really teaching others to be greedy, just like we are! I see money bloggers often believing they help others by teaching them to make money…they are really just trying to make money for themselves!

If you seek out new bloggers (meaning a blog just started by a novice), what is your intention? Is it to gain a link? Is it to sell them something? Is it to truly make a friend? I am just looking to make a friend.

Some Thoughts on Technorati

Let’s set the record straight on Technorati. If I link to you, you gain +1 in authority. If I link to you 1000 times, it still only counts +1. I cannot add 2 or more points to another blog’s authority. That link will last 180 days! After 180 days, it no longer counts! So…you can fight to raise it, but it is only temporary!

A friendship lasts longer than 180 days, definitely something to think about! This is why I never check my stats…it’s the most irrelevant information in the universe.

Give The Gift Of Reading

“For anyone wondering how they’d go about looking for new blogs, look at MyBlogLog’s list of new blogs. That will get you started

Brown Baron

Read other blogs and leave them comments. Read blogs in many different categories, other than your own! Brown Baron recommended to read blogs listed in the new blogs section on MyBlogLog. Don’t go hit these new folks with a sales pitch or asking for a digg or stumble!

When you visit a blog, you are entering their home! It’s like going to someone’s house for dinner. Have some freaking manners! Read their blog…it’s the greatest gift to give

Link to cool unknown posts from other bloggers. Most people link to the same blogs, usually the big, well known blogs. For crying out loud, the big blogs have enough links. It’s like sending an expensive present to a multi millionaire. I’m often amazed when I see a restaurant give free meals to famous stars. Why do they do that? Feed a starving child for free and charge the star!

Don’t Be An Expert

When I started blogging, I didn’t have any readers. So, I started reading about how to get readers. One of the things that stuck in my mind was the recommendation that being known as an “expert” is good for traffic.

When someone claims to be an expert, they come off as not an expert. Experts don’t claim to be experts. A true expert is one who realizes they are but a beginner, no matter how much they know. If you are an expert, let others say it, don’t say it yourself.

I remember the 1st time I heard someone talking about their glass being half full. Immediately, I thought they were referring to Zen philosophy. Hahaha…they weren’t! A glass half full means optimistic, half empty means pessimistic (live and learn…hehe).

I say the glass is always empty, as my mind is always empty…detached from the situation. If you want an in depth explanation of detachment, read my post, Beyond Thought II: Detachment. The western mind is often a full glass. There’s no more room in that glass for new knowledge. Claiming to be an expert is a pure expression of being a “know it all”.

“Remember this. The traffic you give is better than the traffic you receive…”

Don’t be an expert…BE YOURSELF!

I Choose To Be Happy

Today, I choose to be happy. I choose to feel positivity explode through every part of my being. I choose to not hold grudges, to not hold resentments, to not judge others. I choose to forgive. I choose to love myself!!!!

I choose to find nice little blogs nobody pays attention to and leave them a nice comment. I know what it’s like to write a blog nobody reads. All new bloggers go through it. You write a magnificent article, you put your heart into it…yet nobody leaves you a comment. I know that feeling, it’s a feeling of sadness and loneliness. It feels so good to have someone come by and leave you a comment.

I ask you all…go seek out these blogs…leave them a heartfelt comment. Introduce yourself and say hi! Tell them something uplifting and make a new friend!!!! Yeah sure, maybe a blog isn’t relevant to your interests. Maybe it’s someone you normally wouldn’t say anything to. Go out of your way and tell them hello!

i-choose-to-be-happy.jpg

I choose to leave a comment on every blog I visit, just to try something I’ve never tried before. I am filled with positivity and hope, I choose to share it with everyone!

The happy face above is on hundreds of sites. I don’t know who the original designer is. If it is you, I’ll happily give you credit!

The Beauty of Friendship

I recently went through a phase where I felt uninspired with my blogging, and for me, I cannot write without inspiration. I almost forgot how much inspiration can be derived from other bloggers! I found the cure. My decision to write a weekly link love post was the best decision I’ve made. I will do my best to bring this to fruition every week.

Reconnecting with Fellow Bloggers

Euroyank

Often in the blogosphere, writers of important information go without the attention they deserve. The fact is, there are two types of blogs that get the most comments of any other blog, money blogs and certain types of personal blogs who have droves of close friends. I love reading personal blogs! Having said that, some blogs deserve being read because of their pertinent content about important subject matter.

Euroyank wrote a post entitled, Why Blog – The New Blog Evolution – this is a great post! He wrote this post because I posed the question of why important information goes largely unnoticed. He authors 15 blogs currently and they all are worth checking out.

Being born and raised in America, I admit freely that I am ashamed of many things we do as a nation. Euroyank’s new post USA #1 Highest Poverty Rate Among Developed Nations, is a must read. This post is no shock to me, I live here, I know what it’s like. I live around 100 miles from New Orleans, Louisiana. This city is so filled with poverty and starvation it is unbelievable. Not only that, the police department is extremely corrupt and it’s extremely dangerous just to walk down the street without being robbed or murdered.

America is in the process of getting a new president. It is scary just thinking about who I will vote for…how can I believe what any of them say? We prove the old saying, “Money is the root of all evil.”

Bill Gates, the owner of microsoft, has enough money to feed every person on Earth! This is only one person. I cannot believe there are people starving anywhere on this planet. The fact remains that the people and banks with all the money will not help these people in any real, effective manner. That is left up to the common working class to take care of, even though they have no money themselves.

Sure, Bill Gates gives millions to help people but that’s not enough. I say he should give billions, not millions. Another thing that is wrong with America is “minimum wage”. What is the absolute least amount of money people can be paid so they do not starve to death? Haha…minimum wage. I think minimum wage should be at least $25.00 per hour…especially if the company paying is a multi billion dollar corporation.

I don’t have health insurance, I cannot afford it. If I get sick…too bad for me. Health care should be available and affordable for every one. If I say it should be free for all, I will be branded a radical socialist…give me a break, there is no pure form of government anywhere on Earth. Writing about this isn’t enough, I am on a mission…learning about what I can do to help change things.

I want to say thank you to Euroyank for writing truly valuable articles. Some of you aren’t interested in reading about stuff like this. You all should pay attention to what’s going on in this world.

Shinade

I call her Jackie as many of you do! Her blog is The Painted Veil, a wonderful blog we should all read. She wrote a post titled I Think I May Be An Oxymoron, which expresses a feeling many Americans share. I applaud Jackie for being brave and writing this post as many bloggers are afraid to say things with even the slightest political stance.

She is a person who believes in God, but has many liberal views…just like me! I like people of all races, all religions and all nationalities. I believe in freedom and love. I am against war and greed. I don’t look at why we are all different, I look at how much alike we are. We are people, brothers and sisters from all across the world. Let us embrace one another and spread love, not war.

Final Thoughts

I’ll be reconnecting with many friends this new year. I have the wisdom to avoid burning myself out, something I didn’t have last year. I want to thank the bloggers who helped me through my depression, there are so many! When I think about how many bloggers I know, it is overwhelming. How can I read them all? Haha…all I can do is try.

Revellian Revelations – Double Standards

One thing that’s been going on lately that I don’t like is that cash bloggers are using social networking to gain links and “make friends” at the same time. Just by saying that, some bloggers will get mad and not like me. See…the thing is, bloggers aren’t supposed to say bad things about other bloggers. Is it wrong? I want to share my “Revellian Revelations” with you.

If I said that blogger 1 is using people to make money and his so-called friendships are fake – mere social manipulation to make money, all his friends will say, “How dare you say that. Some people have nothing better to do than put others down to make themselves feel high and mighty!”

This will destroy friendships…even if it is true! If I started a site that judged others…I would be hated. If I handed out “Worst Blog On Earth” awards to famous bloggers, people would despise me. If I said, “This blogger is the most prolific liar and genius at social manipulation for self gain – the Hitler of blogging!” I would be shunned by all…even if it were true!

Double Standards

This defines the double standard in blogging, just as in life. If I did these things, I would be the scum of the blogosphere. However, If I made a million dollars doing it…I would be cool. I would be worshiped, with thousands of fans. I would get richer as I became more ruthless.

It’s like in real life, with famous movie stars. Johnny Depp was a heroin addict at one point in his life…this only adds to his mystique, increasing his marketability, especially with female fans. Normal people don’t have the same luxury! If Billy Joe from nowhereville, USA were an ex-heroin addict, what girl would find that sexy?

Imagine her telling mom, “Well mom…he doesn’t shoot up heroin any more!” It would be different if his name were Johnny Depp…wouldn’t it? One of the most ruthless mass murderers in history is Alexander the Great. Because he was successful…he is looked up to by people worldwide! Hitler was not successful…therefore he is hated by all people.

The difference between an insane murderer and a beloved leader is measured by success…particularly by monetary success. If there was ever a person that should be called an “anti-christ”…it is Alexander the Great. However, great leaders all throughout history look up to him as the greatest. The truth is, Alexander made Hitler look like a punk by comparison!

Take for example, the actor Colin Farrell. He has herpes (according to Halle Berry). Do you know how many women he has given herpes to? He sleeps with girl after girl…leaving them behind as soon as he pulls his pants up…yet this makes him a sexy bad boy…hahahaha!!!!

If I become a famous rock star, I want to infect myself with hepatitis-C from Pamela Anderson just like Tommy Lee and Kid Rock. Imagine how disgusting these people are! The baddest bad boy finally bedding the sluttiest slut!!!! This is what the world considers to be news…OMG…I think I’m going to puke.

How Do You Measure Success?

Is success measured only by money or fame? What do you think? How does this double standard play out among bloggers? I am just making some observations about things. I don’t have anything against Johnny Depp, in case you were wondering.

Some bloggers make money through PPP and Smorty while being a real friend with other bloggers. Personally, I see a big difference between bloggers like this, than true money bloggers using social networking to use people for their friendships. Do you see the same difference?

Most of my blogger buddies make some extra money but they are true friends and I respect that. However, I do not respect these bloggers who are on the verge of being huge…who join every social network to further their quest for financial gain.

It’s just like the example of famous people I used earlier. Once you become famous, you get famous friends. Many will leave their old friends behind. We often see bloggers who become big do the same thing. That’s why I don’t want to be big. Big money changes many people in bad ways.

That’s not to say money and success cannot be handled with true integrity. Many rich people are super nice, caring human beings. Therefore…my goal in life is to remain my true self regardless of what happens or doesn’t happen. To me…success is not something I choose to measure. Who am I to measure the success of someone else. Success is different for different people!!!!

Goals For 2008

My goals for this new year are simple, as placing unrealistic expectations on myself are not healthy. I want to nurture the wonderful friendships I have. I want to be there for any of you that ever need a friend. Also, I want to remove all resentments in my life, especially those directed towards my deceased father.

It’s not my job to judge others, other people can do that. Judging people, sizing people up and holding grudges is bad. These are some of the things I will strive for in 2008!!!!!

An Apology To Christy and My Readers

Think Before You Speak

It seems my last post upset a few people and I never intended for anyone to take it personally. When I said that writing a paid review was basically being paid to lie, it’s just how I felt at the time and I was in no way judging anyone who writes them.

I often write from the perspective of devil’s advocate in order to incite discussion so that I and my readers can learn. My friend Christy from Christy’s Coffee Break voiced angst in her recent post Hurt Feelings – Some Christy Drama. I am really sorry Christy.

The truth is, I shouldn’t have said what I did in such an absolute, judgmental way. Some writers don’t reveal their highs an lows but I tend to write what I feel. Sometimes I have to get something off my chest so I can progress and learn something valuable.

I have been wanting to do something much more serious in blogging and have been evaluating options for months. I was extremely frustrated when I wrote that post and I did not hold back.

Lesson Learned

I have learned something. I wish I had learned it in another way, but it happened and now I must move forward. It really bothered me after writing my 1st paid post, that I was basically being told what to write. I don’t know why it got to me the way it did, but I knew I wanted to feel that what I was doing wasn’t wrong.

Writing paid posts is new to me and I take so much pride in what I write, I need to have some serious feedback to show me another perspective. Well Christy, you definitely gave me a different way of seeing things!

Some comments including Christy’s on my last post, Blogging For Money is a Dirty Job
shared the idea that if you pick what you really like and feel positive about, then you are giving an honest opinion.

I will take this lesson with me into the future as I write sponsored posts and I know that I shouldn’t be so hard on myself or others when I do. Whether I meant to upset anyone or not, I did. In the future when I am frustrated or angry, I will remember this incident so I don’t upset someone as nice as Christy.

Christy (and anyone else who might have been offended), I hope you’ll forgive me and I will definitely not forget what I’ve learned. I respect you and your work and I will use much more discretion when writing in the future.

Blogging For Money is a Dirty Job

Disgusted by Truth

So I started dabbling in this money thing with my blog and I have decided that I don’t like it. It happened Saturday Around 3:30 am. I saw the ads sitting there, like infectious blisters erupting from the face of my blog. I was overtaken by sickening chill, I fell onto the floor, unable to stand.

I managed to crawl into the bathroom where I pulled myself up from the shame, and there, looking back from my reflection – a stranger. As I gazed into the mirror, I heard that voice say, “What have you become? Look at yourself…is this who you are? You disgust me!”

dirty-bathroom.PNG

The True Nature of Money

If I write some sort of sponsored review from any of the popular programs available, I am not writing my opinion, I am being paid to say whatever it is they want. To make $100,000 per month is a pipedream for sure, especially by using most of these services.

It should be against the law to use the phrase ‘paid opinion’ in any form of advertising. It is a reworded script, dictated by the rules of the company. Therefore, you are being paid to lie!

Ad Blending versus Ad hiding

I am not a business type of person but mostly because it’s so easy to see through the lies of most advertising. Whenever I try writing business information, trying to earn money, it makes me feel so dirty.

It makes me feel like garbage. I used to sell cars at one point in my life, and that was my real introduction to sales. No matter how many different car dealerships I worked at, one thing was true of them all. The number one salesman at each one was always the most cut throat, back stabbing and best liar!

Many popular ads have resorted to methods of ad blending; where the ad is placed on a page so as to make it appear not an ad, but part of the site. The trick is to deceive you into clicking ads accidentally. Look in my sidebar and you’ll see a perfect example of an ad disguising itself as a normal tag cloud (ad has been removed).

Google wants people to blend Adsense into their blogs, placing them strategically to increase the probability of a hit. Placing ads closely to commonly clicked normal links is the best location; doubling the chances of a hit.

Kontera and other types of contextual ads are camouflaged within the posts themselves. So I wonder, what is the difference between something hidden and something blended? Blended simply means it is trying to hide but is actually visible – and so it is legal.

Conclusion

I will leave up some ads to pay my bill for keeping this site going. I don’t like doing that, but I cannot afford to spend a lot of extra money. I will be starting other blogs to earn real money but not with this one.

Though I still feel violated and encrusted in filth, I must carry on with my blogging. It’s such a shame that things work the way they do, but I cannot let that get me down. The truth is, money and friendship do not mix :!:

Stay tuned to watch me battle myself in many future articles. Will I become BloggerX? Will I throw blogger X off a building watching him splatter on concrete? Will I wake up from this terrifying nightmare?!
