How To Cope With Stress

I often see people struggling to find something to write about. I have the opposite problem; I have too many ideas and have to separate one from the collective, whittle away the unessentials and find some semblance of direction. I imagine carving away all those things unnecessary in my life – leaving splinters of anger and stress all over the floor. There I am, buried up to my neck, trying to crawl out of my own pile. While thinking, I remembered something that affected my personal life and how it helped me to become a stronger person.

Stress builds up in our lives and we must release it somehow. We hold it in, sometimes for years. Some of us unleash it on the people closest to us by screaming hurtful things at them, trying to balance the hatred and angst we hold within ourselves. Then we read articles about relieving stress. They tell us we need a massage, exercise, psychotherapy, a hot bath in a dark room filled with candles, soothing music and God. All of these things may help, but I see another way.

Before stress even begins, we must learn to let go of thoughts that fester and nurture stress. It has a lot to do with whether we, in some way, decide to be stressed or not. Ultimately, we decide how we feel. If we allow other people and situations to control how we cope, we lose. We fall prey to the intentions of others, not ourselves.

A paramedic friend of mine became so stressed out from his job, that he attempted suicide to kill the inner pain he was suffering. I’ll tell you what happened so you will understand why:

The Man Who Destroyed Himself

A few years ago, a medical emergency was phoned in. He tried to avoid going to the scene because it was his brother who had called. He wanted another paramedic team to handle it because of the stress of dealing with his own family. It’s generally a good idea for EMS workers to not handle their relatives’ emergencies. Unfortunately, no one else was available, so he had to go.

His brother and sister-in-law’s new born baby was choking on a plastic hair clip and couldn’t breathe. He placed the infant on his forearm angled towards the floor, giving gentle but forceful taps to the infant’s back (the standard technique, please don’t attempt this yourself without proper medical training). The baby was blue, fighting for life. He did everything he could, but the baby suffocated and died.

He followed procedure and did everything he could possibly do. He has over 25 years experience and had similar experiences before. His brother and sister-in-law blamed him for the death. Imagine the anguish this man lived through. Eventually, it became unbearable as his family never forgave him. He turned to alcohol and drugs, sinking into the wretched claws of intense depression. He attempted to kill himself with painkillers but survived. He lost his career and his wife left him, siding with his brother. To this day, he has not recovered and has destroyed himself. I haven’t seen him in over a year.

Solutions and Reasons

This is a real world example of self-inflicted stress and depression. Yes, what happened to him was horrific. Yes, his unforgiving family was wrong for blaming him. I don’t want to sound insensitive, but it is his fault for allowing this to destroy him. He wasn’t prepared to cope with such a situation – that is the key. He could recover if he learned how to.

The point is, being prepared with strong life coping skills is something we all need. Perhaps if he had a forgiving and understanding family, none of this would have happened in quite the same way. Envision yourself in the same exact situation; furthermore, imagine how you would handle it.

This post is not about alleviating stress, it’s about preventing it by having strong coping skills. I’m not saying we shouldn’t have heartache, but we cannot allow that heartache to continually linger – thus, destroying our lives. It takes a great understanding of family and relationship dynamics to get through a dark event like this.

Every element in the situation feeds off of one other. We must throw a wrench into the gears to stop this perpetual stress machine. We must allow ourselves to heal and not hold in self blame. We must let go of it and be strong – without feeling guilty. All it would take, is if my paramedic friend to be strong and truly let go – being an example of personal love. If only one person in his family came to the rescue and forgave him could also be the key. Something must change for healing. Keep doing the same thing and you’ll get the same results – a self-perpetuating cycle of gloom.

The answer in nearly all situations is love. We must love ourselves. Be your own best friend and forgive yourself. Be compassionate to yourself and everyone in your life. Sometimes we have to end relationships, but we cannot hold the feelings in – as you can see, it destroys lives and allows no room for living. To me, this has more to do with spiritual growth than in does mental or psychological. Don’t ever be afraid of seeking help. You can find it professionally, from friends, family or a friendly blogger. There are wonderful people everywhere who can help you. If you don’t have anyone to talk to, come to me – I’ll help you in anyway I can.

Remember, don’t feel guilty about not feeling guilty – it doesn’t mean you’re a bad person because you can get over things. To make it through life, you must learn to help yourself and not be afraid to ask for help. Be strong and have a wonderful day!

The Secret – Exposing The Truth and How it was Conceived

I was apprehensive about writing this post because I know that many of my readers buy into “The Secret” (a movie based in the law of attraction, featuring interviews and dramatizations). It is not my hope to upset you, but to wake you up. Even if you don’t agree with me, please read this with an open mind – afterwards, we can politely disagree!

Bobby Revell

A Look Behind the Marketing Cult

“The Secret” is basically the concept of Australian television author and producer, Rhonda Byrne, who claims she miraculously uncovered this ‘secret’ from reading The Science of Getting Rich, written in 1910 by Wallace D. Wattles.

She studied religions, cult leaders, televangelists, military leaders, philosophies and money making techniques used throughout history looking for a common thread – something that made them popular and effective. She also studied the ways powerful self-help, and positive attitude speakers fired up crowds and incited motivation.

This culminated in one of the biggest money making ideas seen from the self-help gurus; this is exactly my point. I hope you can wrap your brain around what I’m about to tell you.

The Hidden Thread of Mind Control

The most amazing idea in this, is that ‘magic thread’ Rhonda Byrne discovered; it is quite simply a marketing concept based on a little religion, yoga, Zen, quantum mechanics and power speaking. Do you see? The ‘secret’ she is selling people, simply describes how she is selling you on it.

She found (she really didn’t find anything, she is using the common techniques of cult leaders) a powerful way to sell you books and videos, and actually named the method she used after the concept she is selling! This is no secret and the truth screams in my face when I think about it! How unbelievably slick!

By psychologically playing into the hearts of millions of people who really need help, she has found a way to present you a cure, tapping into the psyche of desire that preys on your need for positivity and hunger for something to believe in.

Most of the people who believe in this pseudoscience, are mostly heartbroken women and men suffering from depression, or people who want an easy, magical money making technique (this is a fact). With Oprah Winfrey’s endorsement, she has sold over 3 million copies of “The Secret” DVD at $34.95 each!

Byrne is also a woman many women can relate to. She suffered depression and financial woes; this is one big reason she is able to sell her ideas. Women see themselves in her and she understands that. She is her own greatest sales tool! Do I hear corporate branding?

The psychological attribute of rationalization is thoroughly addressed in these concepts so that you are trained to believe it and argue for it – as you learn it, much like cult leaders do.

By the time you are feverishly enthralled in the program, you have already been trained to find endless reasons to not question it’s intent (the oldest trick in the book).

The real and only ‘secret’ is that if you can fool people, and prey on the emotionally distressed – making them feel happiness from the belief itself, you too can make millions the same way.

Here’s a basic idea believers are taught:

To attract an abundance of dollars, we must remember that we are wealthy in direct proportion to the amount of money that passes through our hands and that it is the movement of money that creates wealth.”

This is basic mind control, psychologically influencing you to rationalize it’s purpose; I learned that in high school.

The Wicked David Schirmer

One of the so-called gurus in the movie is David Schirmer, a multi-millionaire from Australia who is apparently ripping people off and using the secret to do it. Please watch the video below, you will see the truth!

My Conclusions

Perhaps you are thinking, “I see your point, but it has helped me and I believe it’s good.”

You have fallen into the matrix and swallowed the red pill! Stay in la la land or take the blue pill, and see how far the rabbit hole goes. The truth is, you do not need to purchase books and videos from these people to find happiness and cure an ailing heart or bank account.

You can be happy and make money by working hard and believing in yourself. Learn to be happy and fulfilled without the secret and law of attraction; this is the best advice I can give you.

If you carefully study the philosophies of Hermeticism and Theosophy, take yoga classes and listen to several Zig Ziglar motivational CD’s – perhaps you’ll see exactly how Rhonda Byrne conceived this marketing concept, just like I did.

It is very similar to the way scientology (sorry, I will not capitalize the S) was designed. Televangelists and cult leaders also use similar methods. Any intelligent writer with an understanding of how these ideas are conceived, can do the same thing. I did as a joke, read “Revelliantology For Newbies“.

Don’t misunderstand what I’m saying. I’m not saying that there is no such thing as the law of attraction or that thought and visualization doesn’t work – because it does work. Many marketing “gurus” sell ideas that are there to make money and probably will not work for you. I have studied Zen, Taoism, yoga, aikido and many human arts all my life. I just recently learned about “The Secret” and the law of attraction – both were nothing new to me. I was surprised that people were making millions selling repackaged, ancient ideas.

The Disease of Self-centeredness

First, I want to say happy Martin Luther King day. What he fought and died for is and will always be one of the most important issues facing the whole of humanity. It is powerfully disturbing that we have become something even worse than racists; we have become a world of self-centered, narcissistic and self-righteous peoples.I recently finished reading my 8th book about the ‘Law of Attraction’. I have read nearly every major religious work and even a few books about ‘Scientology’. I forewarn everyone, you may be highly offended at what I’m going to say.

I am neither a leader or a follower, I am an individual. I am a seeker of truths and strive to understand truth with open mindedness and clarity. The reason I read so many books about the law of attraction is that I kept trying to learn something new, something I didn’t realize on my own, back in my early teen years. I never found it!

I thought everyone already knew the general ideas in this type of subject just by virtue of being an intelligent human being. If the law of attraction helps you, and you believe in it, then it is good (but what is ‘good’). However, anything you believe that helps you is good – whether it’s a religion, a cult, a self-help book, a philosophical revelation or a visit to the psychiatrist.

I will point out, that simply being educated about all these things and believing in yourself, beyond any teachings is the same thing…generally speaking. Because of the shallow way this world has evolved, both spiritually and intellectually, people are likely to follow something; they are looking for truth. They want to be shown truth, not discover it within themselves.

That truth is not in any book or video or seminar; it is within your own mind and fueled by your own desire to understand it. Some folks may say, “Yes, exactly…that defines the law of attraction!”

Hahahaha…no it doesn’t! If it did, it wouldn’t be called that…it would simply be called truth! Truth is not a marketing tool to sell books. Quite simply, the law of attraction is a marketing tool which is popular simply because it reflects humankind’s need to seek what what it believes it needs in the present time. It is a sign of the times.

People want to gain wealth and have a good life for themselves and their children. This is because that “good life” is for the privileged few and most of us do not have it. We are so animal like, so filled with greed and envy. It’s both our own faults along with the governments and those who have wealth.

If you are wishing, praying or visualizing yourself gaining wealth, you should be ashamed! Wish and visualize helping humanity, not lining your wallets. I’m sorry, but “praying” for material objects helps fester and perpetuate all that is wrong with the world. What’s sad is that people are getting rich writing books and selling people these ideas…WAKE UP!!!!!

If I said that a family’s inheritance to their children should be illegal, what would you think? No matter what you think, it is a fact that by having legalized inheritances absolutely causes a lopsided division of wealth over a period of time in any form of government. Surely if a parent has saved $150,000.00, they want their children to have it.

If you have 20 newborn babies, are they equal? In most cases, yes – but not in wealth. If one child’s parents have 50 million dollars, then that child will live a privileged life. The other children will have to fight for themselves. Thus, survival of the fittest doesn’t apply! It becomes survival of the wealthiest and greediest!

On the flip side, if the government took 75% of all inheritances, corruption behind closed doors would occur! Look at the forms of government in today’s world. A communistic government will always develop inner corruption and will rot from the inside out. A society based on money like in the US, the wealth becomes one sided forming a massive poor and middle class where people barely get by.

It is inevitable that the US government will not last forever, but I am not afraid. So what would work best? How can humanity solve these problems? I believe the answer cannot be achieved through government.

Right now, Americans are giving up liberty for protection by the government. What are we afraid of? I say there is nothing to fear, not even death. We are not fighting for liberty, we are fighting for greed and wealth!

“Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both.”

Benjamin Franklin

Can you see the problem? Have you learned something? War and violence is not the solution; they are the traits of nescience and cowardice. The answers are in heart of individuals – each and every one of us.

Should individuals legally be able to keep billions of dollars just for themselves? Therein lies the problem! This is the wrong question. I say, sure, an individual has every right to keep billions – I ask that individual, “Why would you want to?”

This is my personal hypothesis. A person should not want to keep this only for themselves, leaving it only for their children. Under an absolutely transparent democracy, free from greed – we can find the truth. I’m not talking about some ridiculous utopia, I’m talking about humankind finding peace and honesty within themselves – on an individual basis.

Unfortunately, this is a paradox. Within the fabric of everything humankind does, lie the seeds of destruction. Therefore, the real answers are inside our hearts, purely and simply. This is why I choose to be my own person and follow no books or doctrines. I do believe in God, but even more than that – I believe in myself.

Peace and love to everyone on Earth
