WordPress Basics for Newbies

It can be difficult for beginners to learn wordpress basics. Newbies have all the information at their disposal, but get overwhelmed. I was thinking about some things I really wish I knew when I first started using wordpress. When you’re just starting, it’s not easy to know what’s important and what isn’t, so here we go.

Most people tend to use too many unnecessary plug ins and most are redundant. Beginners are simply unaware of what’s already built in. I highly recommend you actually read the wordpress codex. While some of the information maybe hard to understand, there is an astonishing amount of useful tips even a novice can use. Any question you have is answered in the codex, if you take time to read it.

WordPress Backups – Importing Files Larger Than 2MB

When doing wordpress backups, there are different ways to do it. You can do database backups in your hosting account c-panel or PhpMyAdmin, but that might not be enough to guarantee your safety. In the wordpress control panel, under manage, you can export an xml file which contains your posts, pages, comments, custom fields, categories, and tags. Now, when you try to import that file because of whatever reason, importing files larger than 2MB is not possible. Most exported back ups are larger than 2MB, so how can you do it?

Blue Host Nightmare: How I Fixed My Blog

Five days ago, I began having extremely bad problems with my hosting account, which was box 350 (server). I feel sorry for the poor souls on that box. As described in my previous post, I started getting cpu quota exceeded errors 20-30 times per day. I called my host over 70 times this week, and that song they play when you’re on hold will cause me to explode in a frenetic rage of blackened anger – I heard it for hours.

How To Clean WP Options – Slow MySQL Queries

When your self hosted wordpress site is getting slow, or lots of cpu quota exceeded errors, how do you fix it? One place you need to look is in your main directory (using c-panel’s file manager) – find a file called tmp. Inside it, you’ll see several folders, one of them is “slow mysql queries”. I used cheap shared hosting like most people (blue host, host gator, etc.). Because of that, you will experience problems – especially if you start getting a lot of traffic. What I’m meaning is 500+ individual visitors per day.

The past 3 days, my site has been suffering from cpu exceeded errors. I know some of it’s my fault, but some is blue host’s fault. On any given day, there are 150 or more sites on the same server. You can check out who’s on your server with IP Neighborhood Reverse DNS Lookup.

Garry Conn Helped Me Save my Blog

Wow…today is an amazing day here at Revellian Dot Com – I could never express just how great a day it is! Earlier, well actually yesterday on July 07 at around 9:30 PM, my site disappeared. It was replaced with a site comprised of Indian Writing. I was shocked to say the least as I thought my site had been hacked. It is a horrible feeling to think your site has been stolen. Initially, I called my host (Bluehost), and they told me that I had been hacked and there was nothing I could do. I had a knot in my stomach that sat like a hand grenade in the deepest trenches of my bowels; the sudden realization that everything you’ve worked on for years – wiped out in seconds by some evil hacker – what a horrifying feeling.

To be absolutely straightforward and honest, I must tell you that there are only a few people I thought of whom I completely trusted to check out my situation: Garry Conn and Andy Bailey – two guys that really know what they are doing. I also thought of contacting Brown Baron, Mike Wheeler, Bush Mackel, Mark Sierra or Madhur Kapoor – five other guys whom I consider experts on the subject. I am a psychic even if you do not believe in psychics, and I just knew instantly who would be available at that very instant: Garry Conn. He was logged onto Googletalk – so I asked for help. Garry stepped in and started asking questions, like how to log into my WordPress account.

It’s a really big deal to just divulge your most private of information to someone, but I know anyone of these 7 guys are trustworthy, which is really saying a lot. It’s nice to know people! Let’s get to the nitty gritty. I contacted Garry Conn, and he responded instantly. What was so awesome is that Garry has 3-way calling, so we called my host together – what a great feeling to have an expert on the line with you. The first guy we talked to from Blue Host was Darren (at least I think that was his name). Garry asked him several questions and told him he believed my site wasn’t hacked, but was instead a problem with my C-Panel (the backend of Blue Host). The guy was really unhelpful and basically told us to fix it ourselves. Garry was insistent that the problem was not a WordPress issue, but was a server side issue on their behalf. I actually have two domains, one of which is not being used, but both were pointing at a strange site.

We finally talked to a superior, who actually helped. In the midst of telling us what the problem might be, the higher ranking Blue host employee discovered the problem which stemmed from them having multiple customers on the same server. In my case, the idea of having my blog hacked by some form of code injection really scared me – this is why I asked for help. Garry handled the entire situation with absolute professionalism. I really didn’t even know what to say, but Garry did – he basically commanded the guy and finally the problem was resolved. So, my site was not hacked.

In the process, I learned that I have too many plug ins and a bunch of database tables that are unneeded. I am currently cleaning all that junk out of my system. Garry said he doesn’t use any plug ins at all. I learned some valuable information in the process. If you use a plug in, contact the author and ask if if it changes your database or if it only adds something on the surface. Sometimes, plug ins do things to your database that cannot be undone – so be extremely careful when adding one. He showed me a page on the WordPress codex, WordPress Database Decription. There are only 10 tables necessary for any WordPress blog. I am cleaning out all the ones which are not needed. Before you get into deleting any unnecessary tables, be sure to back them up beforehand. If you have any questions, contact one of us for help.

I had a fantastic conversation with Garry via the phone. We talked about everything from blogging, politics to life itself – a great conversation. I could go on forever about all this, but I just want to thank Garry Conn. He really helped me out and it means the world to me. There really are great people out there, and I consider Garry to be one of the best. My blogging spirit has been renewed. Be sure to visit Garry at Garry Conn dot com and check out his incredible make money on line ideas. He wrote a great post entitled Garry Conn dot Com is Fixed! Come Check it Out! which explains some turmoil he went through during a server crisis. Maybe I could have fixed it myself; maybe someone else could have helped me; all I know is that Garry Conn is the one who did it. When you face losing everything, and you get it back with no problems – what a great feeling. Thanks Garry!

WordPress Ping Warning

I noticed MaxBlogPress has a plugin called the ping optimizer which I wish I’d been using all along. This plugin is a necessity for anyone running a self hosted wordpress blog, and therefore deserves mention to those of you who might have missed it.

A few months ago I edited tons of old posts, fixing the title tags and did several edits of each one. After installing this new plugin I learned how bad this pinging problem is. If I save a unpublished post as a draft, it pings!!!! If you have a blogger blog or a wordpress.com blog you won’t have this problem.

Is this the culprit which ruined my page rank? I turned pinging off on the plugin’s options. It lists what is pinged and what would’ve been pinged. Just working on one post (a draft) I was shocked to see what would’ve been pinged if I weren’t using this plug in!

Take a look at this (keep in mind, this is only a section of the pings…around 50% of what actually happened):

wordpress-pings.png

WOW!!!! Unbelievable. The day I edited most of my old posts probably pinged thousands of times. This will get you listed as a ping spammer quicker than you can blink. They really need to fix this. I believe most of the pings were caused by the autosave feature because I didn’t save the post that many times.

WordPress needs a global pinging control to say the least. Keep in mind, a post doesn’t have to be published to ping every service! Thanks to MaxBlogPress for giving us this plug in. I imagine that I’m listed as a ping spammer in many places. This plugin isn’t perfect but will certainly help! I leave pinging turned off and just do it manually through Ping-O-Matic.

My New Site Launching Soon

First, I want to say that many of you have participated in the Blogging For Friendship Project recently and I am working on the posts now. I have some surprises for all of you. Also, my good friend Christy and I are definetly still friends  I don’t like to have a woman upset with me! A man? Who cares…but a woman, no freaking way.

My New Site Launching Soon

I bought a domain specifically for earning money and ruthlessly salivating over every $2.83 monthly payment…ha ha ha! Honestly, I need a new pair of shoes really bad and a $750.00 SEO book…LOL!!!!

Trying to come up with a fresh name for a money blog isn’t easy, I mean there are people buying every domain name they can in that niche in hopes people will have to buy it from them because all the cool names are already used.

I was trying to think of something with the word monetize in it and I don’t know why. The suffix “zilla” is used on many sites like Mozilla, Filezilla, etc. This inspired me to come up with a very cool niche site name – Monetize + zilla = Monetizilla , using Godzilla as the Logo star. It will be Monetizilla Dot Com!

It will be no ordinary cash blog. It will be serious monetization training, advertising, paid reviews and satirical, “Pulp Fiction – Mad Magazine” articles and stories. I can’t reveal too much, but I assure you that I may be sued by some famous star for writing lurid tales about them.

An Awesome Contest Coming Soon

I will also be having a contest very soon!!!!!! Yay!!!!! I’ll give you some details now. I will be giving away a website created and hosted by me. The winner will have to choose a domain name and buy it. What? The winner has to buy it? Yes, it is $10.00! The 1st year will be paid in full. It is a contest for those of you who may have a blogspot blog and want to go professional.

If you are interested in owning your own site and getting all the awesome features available only on a self hosted blog, don’t wait until it’s too late to buy the name you want. For many people, hosting themselves will be difficult. That’s where I can help. I will be providing weblog hosting to a lucky winner!

My host is BlueHost, one of the best available. When someone joins BlueHost by my referral, I make $65.00, which is a nice check for one referral. They charge $6.95 per month+ the $10.00 domain name registration. I paid mine all at once, which was $95.40.

If you join Blue Host with me as your referral, I will give you 1/2 of my commission which would be $32.50! That lets you buy and own your own site for only $62.90, that is the best deal you can get anywhere. This really pertains to people who will need help and coaching to learn how to operate a professional site.

I will help you go over everything. If you have a blogspot blog and want to move it without losing page rank, I’ll help you do that too. If you are thinking about that dream site, get it now, before your desired name is unavailable. Then, you will own it! You can spend a little time learning how it works before you actually start your new site, or move your old blog to it’s new home.

Without hosting yourself, you have no idea what you are missing. If you want to make money or would like the power of a wordpress blog, I am offering you a $32.50 savings and personal guidance forever. If you want to take a step forward and are ready for that next level, simply click the BlueHost banner below to sign up

Ethical Commenting- Comment Luv

Beyond Ethical Commenting

Having a do-follow comment policy is very cool and really nice for your readers. While many of you might think this has nothing to do with blogging ethics, in the land of Revellian, it does. Does it mean you are unethical by not being do-follow? Of course not.

I look at it as being a notch above mere ethics! Being a giving member of your blogging community makes you ethically cool!
